Gauging Interest: High-Quality Vinyl (Reflective) Plate Replicas

Hey guys. So I just got together with another BRZ owner, and noticed he had a very interesting feature. It was a high-quality vinyl reproduction of his license plate. It was generated from a high-quality photo he had taken of the plate, so it had screws and everything. It was actual size, and it is also reflective, just like the real thing. Basically, it's a real plate, just on vinyl (or, to use his words, "printed and covered with a clear vinyl coating"), so flexible to conform to the shape of the car. If it wasn't curved, I probably would not have noticed it wasn't an actual plate. I decided I wanted some too.

Trouble is, to print just one or two plates will cost over $100 due to the effort involved in setting up the (expensive) retro-reflective material. However, if just 10 plates are printed, the price drops to $20/plate. I'm sure if more people ordered the price would drop further (this is at a local shop.)

Would anyone have any interest in going in on a group buy on something like this? All you need is a nice, high-resolution photo of your plate, which is what will be printed on the vinyl. It looks really good. If there is enough interest, maybe we can get something going!

Legally, I'm not sure you could use these to replace the plates on your vehicle, but hypothetically speaking, I sure wouldn't mind it if I was allowed to... hypothetically... replace the rear plate with a vinyl sticker that looked completely real, but didn't rub and scrape the paint and rattle every time the trunk was shut. Hypothetically, of course

Thoughts? Opinions?

This is the best I can do as I didn't get a good photo of it at the time. I can definitely get him to send me a better photo.

As stated previously, it could be for someone who wanted a plate that contours to the body. Personally I like the idea of a sticker on the back that won't rattle when the trunk is closed, and also won't rub against the paint.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal to use in place of your actual plate. It's still considered a fake plate. It's like carrying a photo of your driver's license because it's thinner, or a picture of your passport when going through airport security.

rubber washers take care of that, and dynamat stuck to the back of the plate.
i agree with the previous poster - i don't think a sticker plate is legal, unfortunately. however, if it is, i'll buy one. can i pay for it with a colour photocopy of a $20 bill?

j/k - couldn't resist that one.

Hey, just thought I'd ask. There are all sorts of things people do that are not legal. Zip-tying your plate isn't legal. Sticking it in the windshield isn't either. Neither is having it fold away under the car. This was just a thought for another alternative.

The plan is to use tape to keep my current plate from rattling. I did that on my last car. I just saw this and thought it might be an interesting, "cleaner," solution to the problem. It looks so real I highly doubt anyone would even notice it wasn't a real plate. If nobody is interested, though, then I guess that answers my question!
