A great review of the new NSX and I agree with all the points he made.

I really wonder why Honda hasn't moved its Corporate HQ to the United States by now.

New NSX has turned in some disappointing track times at Laguna Seca (MT Driver's Car of the Year) and at VIR (C&D's Lightning Lap).

Of note, at VIR it was torn to shreds by the Corvette Gran Sport.

All that tech, and all that weight, for what?

Not too many people will race their brand new NSX's. It just goes to show how people think. If I purchased a car partially because it set a record on the Nordschleiffe (like the GT-R did in 2009), what are the odds I will ever get anywhere remotely close to that time if I was on the Nurburgring? And what are the odds I'd ever drive that car 10/10? Same with the Cadillac CTS-V.

I am sure it is a damn nice car packed full of tech and based on how Honda does things, very well engineered. The looks or the brand might/might not be everyone's taste, but that doesn't mean it isn't a very nice car.

It's goal was to beat out the Nissan GTR, which it did.

I agree that all of the weight and tech isn't needed, but honestly, I think the lap time it posted was right around the range that they developed the car for.

If anything, I think the price should be substantially lower.

I don't know that the price should be lower, cars have in general gotten much more expensive. To get your foot in the door with a 911 you already have to spend basically 100k after taxes. The NSX is a bargain IMO compared to a 911 Turbo S. It's also a bargain compared to the BMW i8, which looks awesome but has fake engine sound to compensate for the I3 engine.

It's not as cheap as a GTR, but a GTR is meant to be less exotic. It uses cheaper materials, simpler design, albeit optimized very well.

You don't see people complaining that much about the Porsche 918 for having hybrid stuff on it, so I think the NSX's problem is that its styling could have been better.

I think another thing people forget is that these hybrid cars aren't exactly heavier than say a GTR or Lamborghini. A big reason for their weight is the presence of AWD. Electric motors mounted on the engine actually increase the power density of the engine considerably, because you throw out a starter and alternator (which is like 30lbs on a supercar size engine) and gain substantial horsepower. AWD on a conventional drivetrain adds hundreds of pounds by itself. Whether or not you value AWD over RWD is another question, but for bragging rights the AWD hybrid system is actually a pretty good solution, just more expensive.

What I would like to see is a RWD mild hybrid, because I don't have 170k laying around for an NSX. If you work out the numbers, the weight penalty is actually just the difference between the battery pack and the stock lead acid battery, plus the weight of wiring and the motor controller, and in exchange you get more power. Admittedly, if you switch the lead acid battery to a lithium ion battery on a non-hybrid you lose a lot of that weight for less money, but as battery tech improves the gap will shrink.

The new NSX is a weird car.

I like the way it looks inside and out. However it doesn't scream at me with any emotion.

It doesn't make me think about it or dream about owning one.

Nor does it really carry the legacy that the original had. It's not a successor to me. It's more like a whole different car with a slapped NSX badge for marketing which doesn't seem to be helping anyways.

Toyota did it right with the new 86. They continued the legacy that the AE86 had. Small engine, low price, NA, Rwd & down to the basics.

The new NSX is everything that the old one wasn't.
