PSA for those of you new to this and considering buying out of state

Given the global shortage and various markups locally, it might be cheaper to buy a car from out of state.

I did this back in 2013 since the BRZ (at the time) was in short supply and sell price was close to MSRP (or sometimes even higher).

I ended up buying from Heuberger in Colorado Springs and got a fun experience out of it. The process for importing a new car into California was also easy, but I have the benefit of having done this many times before...

Obviously the procedure varies from state to state, but since California is the most complicated it still is pretty valid.

Hi guys. If anybody is in the New York area, just wanted to let you know that the dealership I ordered my BRZ through just told me that they have a limited edition automatic in white on the lot. They are Smith Cairns Subaru in Yonkers.

Wait, people really think they need to buy in-state?

Buying out of state only sucks for taxes and plates.

Not everyone has the luxury of a dozen states within 4 hours driving distance.

If I drove the 6 hours to San Francisco, I'll still be in California.

For most east of the Mississippi, 6 hours might get you 6 or more states.

As for taxes and plates, neither of those are required to be paid or acquired in the state where the dealer is, unless that dealer has zero experience selling out of state.

Huh? You pay TTL in the state in which you are registering the vehicle, not where you buy it from.

And you should have this all worked out with the dealer before you even leave. I done it multiple times in different states and never had an issue.

If you are from CT and decide to buy from another state, you'll pay sales taxes and all other expenses from CT. You'll also have to register the vehicle to CT, not from where you buy it from.

sorry, not all of us are experts. and some dealers like to take advantage of it.

I figured it was common sense to educate yourself on "X" when making a decision on "X" LITERALLY involves spending tens of thousands of dollars.

If someone is too lazy for that, I don't feel bad for them.

To clarify, some people had issues with the 2013s being bought out of state, but was left in a situation where the selling dealer accidentally put some of the local/county taxes onto the purchase price of the car.

I have also had experience with other dealers where they initially did not factor in the sales/use tax into the total amount financed.

Every so often you come across a dealer that doesn't know how to do the paperwork properly, or someone new at the dealer that doesn't know how to do the paperwork properly.

Caveat emptor. my original comments are relevant for the dealers that know how to sell out of state:

I paid no fees of ANY KIND in Colorado. The tax was forwarded to CA DMV via a Cashier's Check from Heuberger Motors, mailed to me, to be turned over to the DMV.

I had no CO RTD tax, no CO title/license fee, and temp CO plates good through 8/13.
