As a machinist I've worked accurately to +/- .0002" before, which is tiny (and stressful). But these things are orders of magnitude more precise than that. So looking into the guts of one of these is like a spiritual experience for me.

Let's see, 0.0002 " is 0.2 MIL (thousandths of an inch) and that is equal to 0.2 * 0.0254 = 0.00508 mm = 5.08 um. Are you using laser or some sort to cut that 5 um stuff?

If you are dealing with semiconductor stuff, that would be < 50 nm nowadays, which is 1/100th of what you were doing.

BTW, the watch is fascinating but I wonder if it is as precise as you were doing. I wonder what the tolerance is for those parts inside the watch.

+/- .0002" was for honing certain connecting rods (actually I think it was + .0003"/ -.0002"). There were Mitsubishi rods that were +/- .0001" that they didn't let me do.

The machine is specifically setup for connecting rods. It has an automatic stroker and gauge measurement built into the part of the machine that applies pressure to the honing stones. The stones cut pretty slowly and you watch the gauge slowly come down (one revolution of the gauge was .001", I think...). Then we measure them, make sure they're not tapered, let them cool overnight, remeasure them in the morning to sort of standardize the temp and do it again...

The bottom 75% is pretty much a perfect match to WRB, so I don't think it was repainted...

If you look at the other car, you can see the same purple with similar tone. That's why I thought it was already *re-painted* or some sort.

Does anyone know that WRB color will have this purple effect under different lighting condition? The one time I saw was on bright sunlight so no purple effect.

Lighting. WRB almost never looks blurple under natural light.

Right?! I mean, you're going to have your cell phone with you if you can afford that watch because you probably can't afford not to have it with you. So why bother with faces if you don't need the watch to tell time?!

Good point, but personally I'd still like to keep things traditional. Other than that sometimes I don't want to carry my cell phone with me so its nice to have a watch when I'm doing something else and not lose track of time.
