Subaru flat 4 with unequal length headers sound like nothing else, and certainly not like a weed wacker inline 4. Probably one of my favorite sounds.

Sometimes it sounds kinda annoying, but other time, it sounds insane.( in a good way.)

Oh I hate that boxer rumble sound with a passion. The cars sound stupid to me. I'm glad the FR-S doesn't have it

an engine could be a spiderweb of pistons, it could be a cross, a shallow angle V, a large angle V, a boxer, upside down V, doesn't matter.

what matters is the engines phasing, and the size and configuration of the pipes.

sound is air moving

that is all.

ever stood next to a velocity stacked V12?

A few years back i stood about 10 feet away from a guardrail as F1 cars were passing by at full throttle, it was unreal.

Music and perceived sound quality is subjective. I think V6's sound bad, particularly the VQ series. As such, it's true and irrefutable. Of course you're biased, your screen name exposes your allegiance.

That said, there are plenty of 4-cylinders that sound awful too; hence their nickname "4 banger".

Like 7thgear said, it's all in the acoustic tuning. However there are a few configurations that give you a leg-up in that department: L-6, cross-plane V-8, and V-12.

To vaguely tie this back to the topic, if Hyundai dropped their V-8 into the GC, they would automatically get some respect from those that currently discount the brand & car.

I think the bigger the V6, the worse it sounds. The old 240 hp 3.0L Acccord V6 sounded ok to me.

The VQ's really stand out to me, but it could also be that there are just more of them with cannon exhausts on them.

Edit: Ryephile, the balance on the V6 is already 56/44, so adding a V8 may not help that much.

Ah yes, we have ventured into that weird "this motor sounds better than this motor" part of the thread.

The weight balance? Well, they better get talking to BMW about how to build a lightweight Al/Mg block so they can have a light V8!

There was a new GTR at my last track day running in a different session from me. I actually thought it sounded quite crappy at full throttle going down the maind straight. If I had to compare it to something, it would be like Chewbacca screaming, with a little bit of mechanical rasp.

Nothing sounds better than a quick revving V10 though. LFA noise=the sex

As for 4 bangers, high-revving honda motors sound pretty good, provided they're on the big cam. I know mine does. It sounds like crap on the small one though.

I never cared for how V8s sound unless they're cammed with a sweet loping idle

I think since we are 46 pages in this thread should close. And Dimman the V6 is 55/45 like the FR-S.

And also the GC doesn't need a V8. The V6 has 345 hp in a 3400+ lb body. It's not a muscle car.

In person, no. Do I love how a V12 sounds? Yes.

Boxer rumble is high on my list, it is what it is. Sounds way better than any other 4 cylinder, IMO.
