Billet shift knob alternative for $100 less

One thing that I’ve always found ridiculous with the Japanese cars I’ve owned is that any decent shift knob is $100-150. I think that’s completely insane. Before I drove imports I had a mustang, and shift knobs were all $30-50.

Soooo I decided to see if there was a workaround, and it turns out there is (apologies if this is a known thing, but I couldn’t find anyone else that has gone this route). After reading around I discovered that 2015-2018 mustangs have m12x125 shifter threads and the same shift pattern as the FR-S, AND they have the same style reverse lockout.

Picked up a billet aluminum shift knob for a mustang with an engraved shift pattern and it cost me $30. Fits perfect.

Great to know! This will result in a greater selection, seems what's out there is cheap and crappy or very cool and overpriced.

That’s exactly the point that I was at. I had an anodized red blox shift knob that was about $50, but it faded to pink after 6 months. I couldn’t stomach paying $150 for a nicer metal ball to replace it. This was the perfect alternative.

I really didn't like the stock sewn knob. So sticky and... ew.

Got a Perrin fat knob at a factory meet & greet for $40.
Good value and still meets ergonomic requirements on my end.

Looks good but I've always wondered: doesn't that thing get glowing hot after sitting outside all day?

The Grimmspeed option is nice, machined Delrin or 304 stainless. $45 and $55 respectfully.

I have a Voodoo in my Miata and my 86, I Like the classic sports car look of a plain aluminum ball with no shift pattern. They get super hot and super cold, but I'm tough.

Yeah they do, but it doesn’t stay that way for very long. After a couple minutes you don’t really notice it. I always have a microfiber in my glovebox so if it’s REALLY hot I just throw it over the knob for the first few minutes I’m driving.

I keep and arm sweat band around the base of the shifter and slide it up to the knob when it gets hot or cold.

Bolt on directly? No need adapter, just plug play?

Yes, just remove the stock one and thread this one on.

The adapter is only needed for 5 speed Subaru models without reverse lockout.
