When someone gives me notice, I congratulate them on their new position and I ask one question. "Do you mind sharing with me why you decided to leave so I can take that feedback and help others?" Answer, or not, that is the end of the conversation. I congratulate them, shake their hand and process the paperwork for their replacement.
A very good way to side step exit interview... er interrogations. These thing burn bridges more than they help keep anything afloat. If a problem is so bad that lravonh is a better option, they didn't get it and it is too late. Then there is the risk of any honest critiqe being taken as a personal attack.

I've never left a company to advance a carrear. Its always been to prevent constany headache or due to it not being as advertised. Quality is always a pratice until the dollar shows up.

This is an excellent way to handle things. It's definitely the ideal way at least but not representative everywhere. :\

Plus for me their big asks were focused on the money, and maybe I'm crazy/an outlier, but to me it wasn't that I wanted/needed a raise.

It was a plethora of other reasons / factors. It's unfortunate but it is what it is.

While telling coworkers today, I spoke to this very nice older lady I'm friends with and she straight up told me, regretfully, that she never even took the risk to leave this company, and she's been here for decades. She actually said she was scared to leave in the past.

She was so understanding of me not wanting to be a lifer and I could tell she wished she hadn't.

She also reassured me, since I've been anxious and a little doubtful about leaving, that I'm making a good, solid decision and that it'll be a good experience for me.

So now I'm a bit more emotional in a way, about it tonight. Knowing I'm also leaving solid work friends, because now I'll have to find new people to confide in and grow new work relationships with.

But it's early in my career and I should, rightfully so, take advantage.

When I left my last position they offered me baskets of cash to stay. Their offer was for actually for more than I make now 8 years later! I must admit it was tempting but the HR manager's reaction (she was as dumb as a stump and a total bitch) of "well I guess you are just too good for us" when I said I would think about the offer instead of just taking it right away really clinched the matter.
Totally agree on the first bit. As soon as I said it wasn't about the money they didn't really even offer any other olive branches (like a real plan for a path to promotion, etc.).

Sorry, but if you can only offer me a salary raise to keep me from jumping ship then that's even more telling.

It's tough to leave a place I've become so comfortable in, but it is what it is.
