Impreza came out in 16 as a 17 model. My wife has one of the very first ones. I am very interested in seeing how the WRX/STi will be transformed by this new platform. Her Impreza is... well impressive. The model cycle for Subaru is sporadic at best so trying to watch trends is complicated. The WRX/STi dropped the pretext of being Imprezas years ago and Subaru has officially said they will be stand alone products in the future (even though they may share many parts bin parts). This of course means that whatever stage the Impreza is in means nothing for the WRX/STi. AlthoughI do agree we will see something next year it may not be a 2021 model year car.

Yeah I like the look of the new Imprezas and with the WRX kit on it, I think it will be one of the best looking ones to come out since the first gen (hereís hoping they donít stuff it up). How does the Impreza handle with the new SGP? Do you think it will translate well to the new Rex?

Should be wonderful. Hers is the sport so has the torque vectoring and better suspension so if they up that it should be excellent. It is a larger car than the older ones of course but they managed to not make it feel bloated.

I disliked my 15 so much I sold it and got a 86

The 86 is a much more enjoyable car IMO

The STI reminded me of a Kia or Hyundai every time I looked at it

Geez, they look pretty good in “stock” Impreza form. It should look pretty cool in WRX form.

There "unnamed" insider stated that is easier to use the Toyota platform for RWD than AWD.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but a AWD platform is already set up to turn its back wheels, isn't the new Toyota platform they keep talking about a FWD base?

Unless the plan is to put the seats in backwards and make it rear engine, RWD with rear wheel steer, sort of like a fork lift?????

It looked like every other 4 door Hyundai or Kia, except for the big wing, stock it wasn't quick at all, tuned to 300hp and it was average, handling was average, it weighted about 1550kg, wet weather traction was its only high point really.

I agree for the most part. Sold my 86 for a 16 WRX and have pretty much missed the 86 ever since. But, at the same time the WRX with a tune and downpipe is plenty fun enough for DD driving and was certainly way cheaper than it would have been to purchase and Turbo the FRS. Not to mention it hooks way better than the FRS ever would have with the same power. Also, I like being able to still drive it in the winter, while I drove my FRS with winter tires, not sure it would have done so well with a turbo added to it unless it was big enough to stay out of boost. With that said I'll be selling the WRX to get a new C8 soon anyways.

Toyota DOES have a RWD version of the TNGA.
The Lexus models exclusively use the luxury variant (TNGA -L variant) , while the lone Toyota using RWD TNGA is the jap only Crown (I think it might be a derivative of the L version, but I don't think its the same L version used in the lexus cars). The Crown isn't a small car though, but TNGA should be scalable....I mean that was the whole purpose of TNGA wasn't it? Streamline the shared components and make them scalable to fit the market segments? Its the only thing that really makes sense if Toyota was to use TNGA for a next gen 86.

And if they do we are back to the age old question of when does an 86 stop being an 86 in anything but name only? If they start changing platforms, whole engine types, or other major components then the car as it is now just ceases to exist no matter what badge they throw on it.

I'm pretty sure all this speculation is wrong. I read 15 years ago that Honda had developed an inline 4 engine with a ceramic block that was lubricated with forced air and had so little friction that it could run without oil. The new technology was going to be used first in Honda racing, then in all new Hondas and finally in all other vehicles as other manufacturers copied the technology to take advantage of the drastic increases in both power and fuel economy.

It's been long enough now, so the next generation 86 will surely have one of these Honda-inspired ceramic engines.

On a side note, every time one of you posts "TNGA," I think of delicious chicken tinga.
