Steering Wheel Peeling

My steering wheel has started to peel at about the 9 o'clock position. At first it just started to bubble a bit, but it has slowly been growing, and is now about the size of a U.S. quarter.

Over the weekend I brought the car in for the 10k miles maintenance (oil change/tire rotation) and had them look at that along with a few other warranty related items.

The dealer said that the steering wheel was a "wear item" so it was not covered under the comprehensive warranty, but that they would replace it this time out of good will. A little annoyed by this, but other then that they have treated me with only respect and have taken very good care of my car, I have been in there many times:
1. Chirping pump
2. New transmission
3. Drivers side window seals
4. Passenger window switches
5. Chirping (again)
6. Steering wheel

I am wondering if anyone else has ran into this? Usually I am overly cautious to make sure my hands are clean before I drive so I do not muck up the interior, and am a bit concerned they are saying it is a wear item. I've had cars with a 100k-200k on them without a damaged steering wheel.

I've had mine since May of 2012, 28k miles and no issues with the wheel.

It makes no sense for the bubbling to occur because of wear. if it was a wear you would notice the grip on the steering wheel start to fade away and become smooth. its a good thing they replaced it for you

Pictures?

I noticed a scrape (abrasive feeling on one spot running it in one direction) on the steering at the 7:30 position after my 7,500 mile maintenance service, but I think it was just the dealer being careless. Definitely not a "bubbling" look.

My steering wheel did the exact same thing, peeling at the 9 oclock position. I took it into the dealer and showed my service advisor, who had it replaced. The car was only 3 months old at the time.

I've had plenty of cars with leather wrapped steering wheels. They usually end up looking like crap before long. You wear any rings?

ya unfortunately some dealers are really careless, after getting my high pressure fuel pump replaced there was a scratch on my windshield on the driver side

I'll post something up tonight, I am at work now. At this point the bubble has "disintegrated" and it just looks like a decent size patch of the finish is gone. No kids have ever sat in my car, no one drives it but me.

Nope no rings currently. My fiance does but she has driven the car only a handful of times. Other then that no one has ever driven the car besides me (except the dealer). She has only driven it a handful of times so that should not be an issue here.

I am glad you got yours replaced as well. Also good to know I am not the only one that ran into this.

Call corporate, I know for a fact that a few people have gotten theirs replaced under warranty. The latest one I saw pop up had 18,000 miles on it, so you should be covered.

My steering wheel is peeling as well, at the 7:30 mark... which I'm guessing is from the jeans rubbing every time I get in and out of the car... mine isn't bubbling, but rather it feels rough and discolored

My car hit 7000 miles yesterday...
