2nd gear grind (yup another one)

So, googling and searching, looks like it's a common issue:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34019

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19260

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19864

After driving for an hour for work, it still grinds for 1st and 2nd gear shifts, with 2nd gear being the majority of the grind.

I'm pretty anal and new to MT driving, should I take it in to get checked? It's only at 1,300 miles, and a NEW issue.

I've been driving stick for almost 15 years. I am exceptionally versed in it and even put myself through HPDE and Rally Driver training during those years.

Sometimes second seems to grab and grind when going into or coming out, but I didn't know it was an issue as it rarely happens. I adjusted my clutch to have a slightly longer throw and it was better. just thought it was too close.

Upon further information I found the following post:

I think too many people don't give it a bit to break in good. Mine's definitely smoother shifting after 10k miles.

I've changed out the Tranny oil and it hadn't done it since.

Mine was a pain in the ass every once in a while even when warm, and downright irritating every time when cold. I switched to Redline MTL and it was slightly better, then I switched again to Motul Gear300 and it was again better. Then I just drove it until it had a little over 9000 miles on it and it's suddenly nothing like it used to be. It shifts just like a sports car should now.

Take it in and make sure the dealership notes that you're having the issue, but it will likely get better with more miles.

I have noticed that as the miles tick off, that my 1st to 2nd gear "nick" is getting a lot better.

What also improved this was adjusting the clutch. My clutch was close to not completely disengaging even with the pedal to the floor. After adjusting the clutch "tighter", the 1st to 2nd grind is better, and the car is easier to drive as well.

I believe the adjustment is the problem, and the fix, for many who have this complaint.

Anyways, I'll bring it in to double/triple check.

Thanks everyone, I'll update the thread how it goes.

Got back from dealership in San Jose. Capitol Subaru.

"Yeah, we get alot of complaints about noises, gears, cabin noises, whistling, unfortunately unless we drive in it, hear/feel/smell the same thing we can't even put it up on racks. If it gets worst, or if it happens again, keep dropping it off for the same reason, we can look at it for special situations."

Fuck that. They're just being lazy. I've gotten the same kind of response before. They probably didn't even try to check for the issue. They're just seeing if they can get rid of you.

I've had multiple dealerships and shops try to pull this kind of crap. Don't accept their laziness. Get their lead mechanic in the car with you and show him the issue, and make sure he acknowledges the issue!

I recorded a video of a previous issue and even showed my VIN in the video as proof that it was my car and they still told me, "It doesn't matter if you have proof. All that matters is if WE can verify you're having an issue."

I told them that was bullshit, took their lead mechanic out to my car, told him to start it up and let me watch him test the vehicle...and then all of a sudden he was like, "oh yeah...I guess it is making noises."

Don't be a pushover. Make them fix your issue...at no cost. You have a damn warranty for a reason.
