glorious mechanical sounds

Maybe I'm just old, but I miss the mechanical sounds that come through from older cars. Shifter clicks, gear whine, genuine (non-piped) exhaust noise, all the things that get blocked with modern sound insulation and isolation.... so while I had my center console apart the other day, I decided to go for a drive. Probably not the safest thing to do since you could see the drive shaft, exhaust and ground through the hole trans tunnel, but it was glorious!! You could even feel the waves of heat coming off the exhaust whenever you stepped on the gas...

Not recommending that you do this, but you should do it.

Ya, I always chuckle to myself when people complain about the noises these cars make.
Go drive an old base line Valliant or Corvair and come back and tell us what you hear.
I miss the sound of a sixpack sucking in air two barrels at a time in sequence.
The one new noise I don't think I will ever get used to is the injectors. They sound exactly like lifters going south in the old V8s.

the ticking was exactly my thought as well. It sounds exactly like your lifters need to be adjusted on the old I6 on the Z's haha.

Sleeping till I'm not tired anymore .....

Yep, the sounds, sights and feels of the good old days ……….

The squeak of the buckboard seat; the clomping of the hoofs; horse blowing snot on your arm as you passed by in front; the smell when the horse farted; the sound and smell of the horse pissing; riding the plow horse as a kid, and your balls itching from the horse sweat and ……. being last to leave the barn dance and discovering someone stole (borrowed) your buggy whip ……

I absolutely love mechanical noises in old cars. It's endearing. You can "feel" what the car is doing on so many levels, where your tires are, what gear the car "wants" to be in and when it wants to be there.

I do expect new cars to be reasonably quiet though. There's no excuse for invasive mechanical noises. These days we've all got electronic steering and fueling. New cars have so little direct mechanical connection there's not much to hear apart from our long timing chains and direct injection. I personally like my soundproofing. My popping rear deck used to drive me nuts, but since that's been silenced I'm now annoyed by the leather of the back seats rubbing together. I guess for me it's apples to oranges. I want my new daily to be relaxing. But my next FUN car will most certainly be some super temperamental Italian car with a symphony of mildly worrying mechanical noises.

It took a little time to get reacquainted with sounds coming from such a live machine but I absolutely love it.

I agree. Do newer manual transmission cars no longer have gear whine? I love that sound...

My uncle has a Jaguar E-type that he lets me drive sometimes and that thing truly sounds glorious! It feels so mechanical. It's a workout!

Thread of the day, noise isn't a bad thing, although wind noise and tire roar is a drag.
