Had an Oh S---! moment

Was pulling into a parking spot today, it was early, no cars or cops around and decided to drift in 2nd. The car went wide so I went on the power (mind you I was doing all this casually with one hand on the wheel). The tail kicked out and it seemed as if I would have the perfect morning parking lot drift. But the
FR-S bit, and I mean hard where I had to counter more than usual in order to avoid hitting a sign (I always leave space for a margin of error, but this was insane). Parked the car freaked out by the whole ordeal. Any similar experiences?

Kinda hard to drift (other than doing circles) these cars if its dry and you are accelerating from 8mph up to around 25 or so. There isnt enough inertia to keep the rear end moving at that low of speed. Be different if you were already going 25 mph and decided to clutch kit it or something.

Yah, I've had an oh shit experience in mine... I was coming off of a traffic circle and I actually WASN'T trying to drift it, but the roads were cold (25 degrees outside... That's Spring in Ohio...) and because of my summer tires, my ass end slid out pretty wide. I corrected and it bit pretty hard. I curbed it... Not very hard, but it was my first real "crash" in years. Live and learn, I guess

I have been teaching someone how to drive a manual lately..since they are mad at me for purchasing a MT instead of an AT. She was driving, coming off the highway, and had a large, 2-lane loop for an off-ramp. She shifted from 5th to 2nd (aiming for 4th and missed) and let off the clutch before I could stop her (we were doing around..40-45 at the time and slowing down). The back end kicked out dangerously close to the concrete divider that separates the off-ramp from the on-ramp. Luckily, the traction/stability control saved us and reigned the car back in. She decided not to drive the rest of the way home.

Sorry for the question, but what does it mean to "bite"?

Bite = good quality grip was regained on a wheel that was otherwise spinning with minimal grip.

Norsamerican got it right though... you need a certain amount of speed to provide the car with enough inertia to defeat the drift gremlins. 5-15 mph is pretty awkward and erratic. 20-30 mph is enough to settle in, if the pavement is consistent. 30+ mph, is enough to spin the car if you aren't smooth.

The only "oh sh__!" moments I've had were in a straight line accelerating through light snow in stock all-season tires. Twice, right around 30mph, I had the rear end kick out unexpectedly. I was able to countersteer and save it both times.

I've had the rear end kick out plenty of times in turns (when I'm expecting it), but it's when it happens in a straight line that I get caught off guard.

Last night after picking up some grub. I came to a stop light, which had dual turn lanes. I was in the right lane behind a vehicle when ended up going straight. I make the turn and before I even complete it, a mini-van in he left lane, cut over into the right lane with me there, and I slam on my breaks and swerve right a couple of inches trying to not clip the curb.

While not the same oh shit moment as above, I thought she was done for, and I would have flipped shit.

The only unexpected moment on my end was a hard shift from 1st to 2nd at redline ...the tail kicked out pretty impressively. I was like "daayyyyuuuummm 200hp?!"
