4th gear grind

I took my car to Hamer Toyota, Mission Hills, CA, because of 4th gear grind issue. It would grind when i shift gear into 4th from 3rd especially after 6k rpm. Shop foreman was able to duplicate issue but noted the it was minor since he was able to shift from 3rd to 4th. He did acknowledge that he can hear some noise and noted that there was a minor grind into 4th gear. I was told to leave car and he will notify Toyota of the issue.

The next day I was notified that the transmission will be replaced. Though I would have to wait a long time due to transmission is on backorder. I was happy that Toyota will honor warranty since car only has less than 13k miles. I was also notifed that Toyota might not replace the transmission if it happens again due to some car modification done to car. My mods were flex fuel, air/oil separator, no cat front pipe and tuning done by delicious tuning. In the future, after new transmission installation, foreman advised me to bring car to stock if transmission fails again before bringing car to dealership.

Foreman also test drove new frs cars on lot for comparison and would note similar grind issue. They were not the same level as mine though. He said you really have to make yourself aware of the noted grind. I was going to install a FI but now I don't know. If the transmission is not strong enough, I don't think I should do more modification on the car. This is very disappointing. I want more POWER for this car. What do you guys think?

Some trans have the issues others don't. The other factor is how people drive, shifting technique etc. Hopefully the next trans is smoother.

hopefully you are right but foreman did notified me that new cars on lot have similar grind issues. there were not as bad as mine and one has to make aware of the grind to notice it. he said if you test drive it for the first time and have not driven a brz/frs before you will not notice it. but now that he knows about the issue it is noticable on new cars as well.

I just picked mine up today after my transmission took a crap last week. Started out as a 4th gear grind and then made a terrible sound pulling away easy from a light last thursday. Had a metal on metal spinning rubbing sound in every gear but 5th after that. Took it in to the dealer and they put a New transmission in and Covered under warranty. Driving the car now with the new transmission, it was never right to begin with when I bought it in June 2012. Transmission is buttery smooth now, even second gear.

It's a design issue with the synchro system and adding power won't make it worse unless u beat the piss out of it racing people lol.

My transmission was never right from the begining as well. It was not smooth at all. It looks like subaru/toyota has a qc issue with transmission.

I just got my transmission installed today. No more grind going into 4th from 3rd above 6k rpm. The transmission feels firmer than before. My former car was a 2012 sti. My transmission on the sti is way better than this transmission IMHO. I wish i could transfer a sti transmission on this car.
