The way the japanese are going more and more people will move to Korean cars if they keep releasing things like the stinger and i30n. The japanese are not exciting anybody.

think you're not really giving them credit but I hope ya know those 2 models compete in rather small slices of the pie...sadly in many cases too small of a slice for a company like Toyota to care about competing in. Don't think either of those will displace a Accord or Camry anytime soon ...gotta keep in mind, most consumers don't care about driving something exciting...if that was the case, F150, RAV4 & CRV wouldn't be leading the sales charts by a big margin.

Sales have shown the last 2-3 years, that American buyers aren't wanting sedans. They are buying trucks , SUV's , and cross-overs. This is all fact. Sedan sales have slowed

Americans must be living phat on the land (in general, no pun), sucking that gas... given those vehicles (sub 25 mpg)

I mean, if you think about it, it's kind of true. In the 90s and early 00s, Japanese performance vehicles were hitting well above their weight.

You had sports coupes that were posting respectable numbers against V8 muscle cars and you had sport sedans that were capable of hanging with german sports cars and exotic, high end vehicles. Now, not quite so much. The STI can't even hang with today's current Mustang or Camaro around a road course. CTR can't either, though it's a bit closer matchup.

Japan still produces quality vehicles, I think. Their simplistic commuter vehicles and such still do exactly what they were intended to do, but the selection is mostly vanilla. Look at Nissan. They pretty much throw some red pinstripes on every car and call it a Nismo. Similar to what BMW and MB are doing with M and AMG badges.

I know they do it because they sell, but it's pretty bland. Mitsubishi has nothing exciting. Toyota is pretty bland (86 aside). And the list goes on.

Times are changing, but it would be great to see more offerings from different companies. I was actually really hopeful with the 86/BRZ coming out that more companies would follow and produce their own vehicle, but so far, nobody's done it. Mazda keeps talking about another RX7 and Honda about another S2000. But still, nothing concrete yet.

The main reason being, is all manufactures are focusing on increasing MPG (EPA regulations) , so that's where a good chunk of their R&D is going towards. Efficiency , that is the name of the game (our reality). Can you have higher (better) by 5-10% more efficiency , as well as sport / fun to drive out of a vehicle (gas only, or hybrid, or... or), sure , but it's going to take lots of gumption to pull that off.

I still believe in a 2021 BRZ/86 with 2.4L naturally aspirated motor. We’ll finally have something that bests the S2000 stock.

Is it going to be more fuel efficient ? 2L to a 2.4L ? I doubt it. If they do a 2L turbo (220 hp, close to the same torque), along with some kind of hybrid system ( some kind of eco mode around town, so instead of getting 22-24mpg around town out of a NA 2L, you're getting 30-35 mpg around town), solid 38-42mpg highway, that would be sweet. Keep weight at around 2800 lbs

Or.... or, even better do a small 6cyl boxer , like a 2.7L . On highway and city driving (eco mode) cut off the two middle cylinders ( so now it's a 1.8L) with some kind of further hybrid system around town. That thing should (possibly) get mid-30's mpg city , mid 40's hwy . Yet, you'd have the 2.7L on full bore going on on-ramps, going 0-70mph , should be a solid 260hp / 230 torque rig

People can try and dodge the whole fuel efficiency thing, it's important , or it isn't important .... need it/want it / don't care, what ever. The reality is, that is our reality. Increase MPG , while somehow increasing torque ( keep weight similar, with in 2-4%).

It's easy to increase HP/torque thru displacement , more cylinders, FI (possibly MPG stays the same or goes down). Not so easy to increase MPG, yet keeping the fun to drive aspect intact.

Except when you are Ford and decide to beat the game by eliminating small cars, and build larger vehicles and trucks that have lower and easier to meet requirements

Ford appeals to the farmer , business man needing a Full sized truck to do certain work. Sure, families of 4+ people also buy them, and SUV's.

Ford is behind the 8-ball, and need a reality check
