Every time I hear of a motorcycle manufacturer venturing into cars or designing an engine for a car, all I can think of is the Smart Car with a Hayabusa engine in it:

Feelin the same way here. Not much interesting automotive news these past few months other than the long strings of talk about the new Ford Focus RS, the Honda Civic Type-R, and the Chevrolet Camaro.

Yamaha SPORTS RIDE CONCEPT could go into production with 1.5-liter turbo

Yamaha SPORTS RIDE CONCEPT could go into production with 1.5-liter turbo

A new report indicates Yamaha has plans to introduce a production version of the interesting SPORTS RIDE CONCEPT.

One of the stars of this year?s Tokyo Motor Show was without any doubt the Yamaha SPORTS RIDE CONCEPT and now we are hearing it could actually be made. It will apparently debut in pre-production guise in less than two years from now at the same show, so it could hit the assembly line at the end of 2017 or early 2018.

We remind you the concept had a very compact size as it measured 3900 mm in length, 1720 mm in width and 1170 mm in height. For the production car, Yamaha is believed to target a curb weight of only 750 kg (1,653 lbs). The edgy exterior design will be toned down to make it suitable for a production car, while the interior cabin will be largely carried over from the concept.

Yamaha hasn?t said a word about what powers the SPORTS RIDE CONCEPT, but this new rumor points to a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine for the production version. Combined with an extremely lightweight construction and a compact size, the sportscar has what it takes to be a very interesting offer in this segment.

According to the same report, Yamaha will establish a starting price of less than 70,000 AUD ($54,191 / ?51,000 / ?35,900).

Those specs are almost identical to the MR2 Spyder except for the weight. The Spyder weighs in at 2195 lbs. I seriously doubt if they are going to get anywhere near their target weight and be able to meet US and European crash standards.

It looks as if it will have another issue in common with the Spyder which will be lack of usable storage space.

I would be OK with this as the successor for the MR2. Mine has a Yamaha designed engine in it anyway.

A lightweight Yamaha powered tub chassis car was available more than a decade ago called the Lotus Elise. Except that was MR (I believe this Sports Ride is FR).

The designer is Dezi Nagaya, ex-Toyota designer of the FT-86 II which ultimately most closely resembled the final production design compared to other concepts including the later FRS Concept.
