Sound question : Catless header + HFC Fp and Catted headr + catted Fp ?
I just wondering between 2 combos
1. Catless Header + High Flow Cat FP 2. Catted Header + Catless FP Which should be louder ? and is the exhuast note diiffers so much ? |

I would go option 3.
OEM header decat, OEM front pipe (maybe decat), with OEM cat back exhaust. Decat to required sound level, cat in header makes the most difference, then if you still want more noise decat the front pipe. Costs the price of 5 gaskets. Or if you want to keep your parts unmodified, buy OEM 2017+ header to cat back and decat that puppy. That could be free to minimal outlay, ask your local exhaust shops what they have used. From alot of research (and wasted money) this solution sounds good, is cheap, and, in NA form, is not a restriction, also, no drone which is a bonus on long drives. Cold start is loud though with full decat, but can be tuned out if required. Opinions may vary

+1 to what 86 said. At stock and near stock levels (max around 190hp with bolt on and tune, no e85) all you gotta do is remove cats and front pipe res for performance. For stock diameter stock power I'd definitely get rid of cats... The pipe is already maxed in terms of power you can run through it. ~ 184hp/147tq (uel/tune) @ 2.11in stock diameter, further restrictions will make it suboptimal.
Do not take away stock midpipe resonator or it's rasp city; but I'd deffo get another muffler...stocker sucks. I'd do UEL, 60mm over pipe, to stock front pipe with 60mm inlet resonator (where 2nd cat was), stock midpipe res, new muffler of choice. More expensive than option 3 but you'll save the hassle of gettign your stock header fabbed up with a collector ... Just keep searching, trust me. EDIT: I'm assuming daily drivability is a goal also and you're not looking to optimize wot. Last edited by AYO; 03-21-2019 at 07:04 AM. |

Type of header will really determine sound as well. Lots of videos showing the EL headers do not sound good on these cars. I would honestly get a catless UEL and leave the rest of the exhaust stock. Nice deep/low rumble. Change the muffler out if you want more noise.
Not much power to be gained with an aftermarket front pipe. |

Debatable IRT UEL and EL, both IRT sound and power.
It's all down to personal preference for sound, and design for power. A well designed EL will match a UEL down low and out perform it up high. Look at the ACE and SME headers for example. The "boxer rumble" was due to initial packaging restraints, now every goes "oh ah" at the sound of exhaust pulses smashing into each other. https://www.maperformance.com/pages/...subaru-headers Opinions may vary

Agree - to me UEL sounds like a flat 6 with two cylinders misfiring. But to each their own. Regarding the other post with decatting a stock header - that's best bang for the buck but make sure you spend the effort/money to replace the cat segment with a good pipe. Don't just empty out the cat or you'll get awful resonance. |

Tuner was surprised at the final outcome. If I get the need a ACE clubsport 400 EL 4:2:1 would be my pick, anything less than that, over the OEM decat, would be a compromise IMO. Opinions may vary

My exhuast mods now is
1. EL HKS Header (Catless) 2. 60" Modified OP with ceramic coating 3. 60" Modified FP with ceramic coating and metalic magnaflow HFC (200 CPIs) non resonated 4. HKS Legarmax Sports Quad Tips Catback (come with resonated Mid pipe) Just changed the head yesterday. It did make the sound louder but very hardly noticable if you don't really listen to it. Overall sound still quite untill after 3,000 rpm when it start making great noise (at least for me). Waiting for local tune up next week, so maybe I will video the sound. |

IIRC, they use Alien Techs' K-TAG or KESS and for who question, they are my friends who happen to be the technical team for the motorsport team, so they tune cars racing in Thailand Super series which is the top leauge motorsport here. If I end up going for FI I will need ECUtek eventually. Last edited by l3ooml3al2al3a; 03-22-2019 at 03:10 AM. Reason: Just to add-up |

The guy who tunes my cars also does some of the TR86S cars here in AU, they should look after you well and have the required experience to get you running well.
