Valve spring failure

Has anyone had a valve spring fail??What were the symptoms? My car is on the list for recall and i dont like what i hear.

There were two guys. The engine makes weird noises and may or may not run. You will get a CEL.

Two cars .Are the race car guys having problems?? I my take my chances and not bother with the recall .

0 issues with my BRZ covered by this recall. Car has ~5000 track miles and 100+ autox events.

I have a friend with a supercharged BRZ that was down power. The motor was taken apart, and couldn't find anything wrong with it. The machine shop started some advanced testing, and found that it had a couple of valve springs that were "weaker" than the others.

O K lets try a different approach. Does anyone think there car runs better,more power or any difference?? after the recall

No. It is just replacing a potentially faulty spring with one that shouldn't break. It isn't an upgrade.

I was thinking if the springs were getting soft,weak from age and use the car may run better after new springs??

No. They are faulty. If they break it is sudden and catastrophic.

Even if the old springs were losing their springiness, I doubt the average driver could tell the difference between old springs and new springs.

Back in the good old days , some performance cars had double valve springs , so if one failed the secondary spring just might save catastrophic failure.

True but the double spring configuration wasn’t for redundancy it was simply to gain stiffness for higher RPM applications. If one snapped you wouldn’t have enough spring force to prevent valve float through the entire rev band. If an inner spring broke maybe the engine would survive at lower RPMs. I’m not sure it would even idle if an outer broke though. It’s all sort of a guessing game what happens when a spring breaks though. What if it breaks and then blocks the full range of the valve? Sounds like instant failure in that scenario.

with so many of these recall threads going I'm not quite sure exactly where to ask, but instead of creating yet another thread until I can contribute some decent information I figured this thread is as good as any..


I have searched for the last day (since I discovered that the car i bought, '13 frs is still on the list for a recall) regarding the J02 recall and what I should expect if the valve issue has already presented itself... my cylinder 3 has had a misfire I have been trying to trace and it looks like compression is way low (90psi compared to 180 on cylinder 1).

I have contacted Toyota/Scion via their recall number they provide and asked a ton of questions and got scheduled with a local dealer to "inspect car before ordering parts" this saturday.. My question that I can't seem to track anywhere is... (if it really is a faulty valve/spring) if the problem already occurred with the engine (possibly causing other damage?) would they take on the recall/get the car operational again?

Its also going to be fun since the car literally has no plates/is not registered due to the fact that I can't drive it anywhere because of the issue that seems like it manifested itself in my driveway while doing a coolant fill..

Without any additional info there is no way to know for sure if the compression/misfire issue is due to valve spring. It seems possible but also possible it could be something else. Is your car throwing any codes? The misfire could be something as simple as bad gas, or a leak somewhere. If I where you I would take the car in for the recall, and talk to the service folks and see what they can find. Ideally the recall would also solve this but at the very least maybe you could get the price off labor for them to fix whatever might be wrong.

To answer your question if they would take on the recall, they have to as far as I know because it is a safety concern.
