My First Turbo (NTC)
Sorry No Twins Content. After posting in the Green FT86 thread I thought some of you might like to see more of the car I first drove. A 1965 Corvair Corsa 180 Turbo. Awe... but not just any 180 Turbo. This was my father's much hot rodded pride and joy. It started life as a standard cream yellow Corsa coupe with black vinyl interior. Dad, sanded it down, primed then sprayed it base coat gold. That was followed by several coats of chartreuse green metal flake, that's FLAKE not metallic. Each caot of primer, base, colour and clear was hand sanded between applications.
After a summer of fun he torn the engine down over the winter. The goal was to make more boast quicker to deliver more horse power. He hand worked the heads, intake and exhaust tracks as well as working his magic on all the moving internals. Balanced and Blue Printed the way the masters used to it. My brother had bought our father's first 1965 Corsa, a four carb 140, before dad had driven the car a full month. My brother ordered performance parts from Yenko Chevrolet for it but I think many of those ended up in dad's car. You think wrapping the exhaust is a new trick? Think again. My dad was doing it long before he built this Corvair. Oh, and where did he work this magic? Well, in the house of course! The tear down and rebuild was done in his den, just off the living room. He heat treated parts in the kitchen oven. I mean if it was good enough for gun and clock parts then it was fine for engine parts too. And how do you get a fully built engine from the house to the garage in early spring? Well, you drag it across the snow on the toboggan that I busted up when I rode it off into the trees. |
