There are knobs with and without the manual shift pattern, and there are knobs with a retainer for automatic (Perrin etc). If you buy one without a boot retainer, like I did, you need to get creative. There should be a market for separate boot retainers for the automatic, so I expect someone will come up with something. Or maybe someone have by now, IDK. |

I can confirm that the method of lifting up the entire shift boot trim and then screwing on the retainer makes for simple installation with no need to modify the 10x1.25 retainer sold by sickspeed.
Now I can simply order any manual shift knob I want and swap them out easily. |

Like the color, too. Looks like a good match for a hot lava :-) |

I started with two. The one I didn't pick for my 86 I put in my old Nissan truck. I would like to see some of the new glow-in-the-dark knobs though! |

It will not fit without doing one or the other. Cutting it is probably the fastest way, and allows for easy removal and return to stock. I don't have a link. It must have 10x1.25 thread, should be easy to find. Last edited by Sarlacc; 02-08-2016 at 03:30 PM. |

Shift boot retainer
eBay link This is all you need, I just popped the bezel off and screwed it onto the rod then put the boot overtop of it so it cannot fall down due to its shape. |

The retainer is the same thread pitch as the rod, it will screw all the way down to where a reverse lockout would be if we were a manual. The shift knobs will screw down on top of the retainer and sit flush with it so no metal is showing. Nothing rattles, it is a quick 40 dollar way to spice up your interior if you are rolling with an automatic.

shift boot retainer

super late response to this, but to anyone who may search upon this post like i recently did, the 10 x 1.25 shift knob will fit. however the boot (leather cover) will dangle sort of awkwardly, some may not care, but i went ahead and got that shift boot retainer, and am currently in the process of modifying it to fit into the shift boot. it takes a lot of grinding, but so far it seems possible. it just depends on how much you really care to modify your shift knob. cause to get it to look RIGHT, it takes a lot of work for something so simple.
