Yeah stay away from the orange can of doom... there have been known issues of filter material breaking down and plugging off oil galleries. A lot of Ford f150 owners found this out the hard way, and suprise no warranty!
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/97...tting-oil.html

Always go OEM filters!

Old post, but quick question... Does it matter which end of the OEM filter connector you install? Is one side longer than the other?

I removed a Forester XT oil cooler to return it to stock and am getting some strange oil pressre issues. Thinking I may have installed it upside down and restricting the flow? But it does look like both sides are the same...

The union looks just like the one that simply unscrews in my Fiat. Why would it have that hex shape if it were a part of the filter base casting and didn't unscrew?

Hard to tell if the threads on the union are OK or just have bits of metal from the filter in them. I would probably replace it unless you can't find a part. The Subie or Toyota dealer probably have them in stock in case one of their techs ruins one.

The threads look similar but are not the same. So it is not possible to install it upside down.

Every filter I have seen says 2/3 to 3/4 turn after seated. But of course "seated" is a relative term. If you use the point at which there is the slightest contact of rubber to metal I've found the 2/3 to 3/4 turn rule to be true.

I always try to back it off by hand immediately after installing it to judge how tight it is. If you have to try your hardest to get it to move its too tight to leave it that way, but if it takes hardly any effort its too loose.

You CAN lose an engine if the filter unscrews and pops off at high revs.

Depends on car. Mini Cooper (2006) I changed oil on barely tightens and it's good to go, my old AE86 I had to tighten that S0B for days. What I do is tighten 1/3(?), drive it bit, check when cool and tighten rest (2/3-3/4). Haven't had problems.

With Fram, that pos filters always melt in my hands. I use more pricy ones.

You might be right about 3/4 of a turn. I know some S2000 guys have had filters come off while on track. Just don't He-Man it on and you should be fine.

since Corp office always seems to find a reason to deny warranty claims, and the OEM filters are not expensive, always use a OEM oil filter!

Are these surface chips anything to worry about? I noticed it on my FRS when I got back from deployment. Is it a warranty item or typical wear and tear?
