phantom supercharger restrictions?

Hello all when using an electric supercharger does it block the intake when its not running? i mean when the supercharger is not running is the car slower than the stock?

Let me see if I can get this right.
The compressor turbine free-wheels until negative pressure is reached, then a feature called Drag-Reduction kicks in where the supercharger pulses the compressor to regain positive pressure. This actually adds about 5-10 hp even when not WOT and is a feature that can be felt while driving.

WOT is Wide Open Throttle.

Anyone who blows a motor with a Phantom ESC probably was being VERY careless. So I'd say chances are very low. As with any modification to your car, take plenty of time to learn in advance. Go slow, and enjoy the process.

A blown engine could be caused by a number of things, this is true for NA or boosted. An engine under any boost increases the chances of going out due to increased stresses and fatigue. Typically in forced induction(FI) applications(super/turbocharger) engine failure it is due to either running too lean (too much air to fuel ratio), or over-boost. The former depends primarily on your tune. If at all possible, use a tune/tuner who has experience or a proven track record with the car/setup. That's not to say something couldn't fail, but a quality tune goes along way to protecting the engine. The second problem, of over boosting is not an issue with the phantom. The ESC is only able to produce about 4.5 psi max, and drops off to around 2 psi at higher rpms, where the engine is under the most stress. This is the lowest boost out of any F/I application, and translates to less stress on the engine over time. Also there are no wastegates or vacuum lines that can fail and cause the to boost to spike to dangerous levels.

It is relatively new, and only a handful have been testing for an extended period of time (longer than a year), this is a guess, but I believe there are about 40 to 50 running this setup, to my knowledge no one has blown their motor while running the Phantom.

If you compare this to any other FI kit, I would think it would be the safest due to having the least amount of boost. That and the fact that your only under boost when you hit WOT. The rest of the time you are driving your car in NA mode. With a normal FI unit your always pushing boost as the revs climb.

How about with the system turned off? DR would not be active and an intake restriction would exist at WOT, right? (not that you would ever turn it off lol) Just curious.

No, it has a drag reduction system that spins just enough even providing very very mild boost when not in use. The draw is minimal so there is practically no impact to the charging system and packs. It's all on the first page of one of these threads.

Yes @Robftss is the only vendor that I know of. It's his invention, project & product. Lots of details in the Phantom thread. also at his website http://phantomsuperchargers.com

@shiv@vishnu is also co-developing for application in Miatas.
