Snell 2015 Helmet

I need to pick one up, but I've only worn motorcycle helmets.

In motorcycle helmets, it's not ALL like this, but basically your head either fits in an Arai or a Shoei. Usually not both, and then obviously other brands tend to follow either of the two shapes.

Anyone worn a Shoei, then had to get an auto racing helmet? I'm definitely a Shoei person.

What brand of auto racing helmet do you wear, to those that know they have a Shoei type fit for a motorcycle? I have to go a ways to find auto racing helmets, and I'd like to make sure I go to a place that has the right brand.

Well I have multiple Arais and Shoeis, and they all got great. I guess I have an universal head? Can't help there. But anyhow, I have a Bell helmet for my car.

I use to have Shoei helmets for my bikes, but have used Bell for my car. You can spend a bunch of money helmets, but Bell offers really good value in their lower priced line.

Good, lower priced line sounds good. I was seeing $1k plus helmets and was reevaluating my ability to go tracking! Thanks!

Go to a local race shop and try on all their inventory?

Of course I'd definitely do that if we had a local race shop.

Next time I hit Portland though, I'll try to find one. Just wanted to get an idea of what brand would fit better, in case the shops each only sell certain brands (I don't know). That way I could go to the one that seemed most likely.

Yeah I should have specified. We have a few motorcycle race shops, but not auto racing. No tracks near here, I'm sure that's why.

As I was scrolling down the main forum page to look at the classified section, this post was at the top of this board. As a result, the title appeared next to the board name. As it streaked by, what I saw was "Smell my 2015 helmet."

I'm rather glad it wasn't what I though it was.

That's all.

Carry on.

Double check your HPDE regs. Most allow a Snell M rating which you can find at a motorcycle shop no problem.

If you need/want an SA rating (definitely a must if you're going to cage your car) and you have to shop online, pick someplace with a good return policy.

I have yet to see an HPDE organizer that has allowed M rated helmets. I've seen them permitted for autox and small drift schools, but not for any track day events. Perhaps they're just run differently in the midwest vs. southwest. Personally, I would not want an M rated helmet in a vehicle accident, as they're designed differently from SA/FIA rated helmets (for different types of impacts).

As for the OP's question. HJC is a great budget option, a few options in the $200-$500ish price range. The first helmet I got was an HJC AR-10 II. Somewhat recently picked up a Black Armor helmet, I know a lot of the 86 track guys use them, and love it. Price is right around $500, and they can offer different padding options on the inside to make a more ideal fit. Plus they're really willing to work with their customers to ensure they get the right product. Worth checking out.

I've used my M2010 rated helmet with TrackDaze and SCCA here in the Mid-Atlantic in multiple HPDEs at Summit Point and VIR.

If you're headed to the track for the first time, you can always borrow one. I have been twice last year and going again this year and I rent one from ORP for $20. The first two were free.

Until I am sure I am going regularly, this is the best option for me.

I recently bought a Pyrotect helmet online from Performance Stop, and had to do a return/swap for different size. Their customer service was excellent. Fast and easy.
