Not sure why you posted that vid. All I saw was a fat sedan go around a wonky corse. Would have been great if the video shows other car's times. Maybe it's the same reason why you don't see a lot of teslas on autox vids.

How about we wait until they actually sell the damn things before we make that call?

He's talking about the Model S.

The video shows it's relatively flat "handling" but I agree, needs competitor numbers for comparison. Why you don't see them at autox is because people tend to not autocross their $75k+ family sedan. Also why anyone rarely sees an M5, S6, CTSV, Ghibli, Panamera, XFR, GSF, AMG anything, etc. out there dodging cones. Autocross is a relatively inexpensive sport - those fat cats with their GTR's, M3's, GT3's are usually tracking and if you've got the $$$ for a fat fast family sedan and are into racing, likely you've got something appropriate on the side. I've seen a few Model S's go around the big ring but I imagine lack of charging stations in paddock may be prohibitive element to it. Also political mindset (surrounded by gross GAS polluters with straight pipes) may also be something to it.

That being said, you bet your ass I'm taking the Model 3 out at least once with the S2K to see how an EV stacks up against 2 liters of fury around the parking lot at Fontana.

A few early Teslas caught fire by running over road debris and poking holes in the batteries under the floor.

Catching a couple cones may do similar.

The range is usually a killer, the two most popular autox sites from my house are >75 miles one way, unless you're charging at a hotel near the site the night before or before going home I wouldn't risk getting stranded (you're going to chew through the available range autocrossing much faster than driving on the freeway). I've seen a BMW i3 and i8 autocrossing, the i3 showed up on a trailer and sadly neither were terribly impressive (I blame the skinny low rolling resistance tires).

I have literally seen all of those cars autocrossing in person with the exception of the Ghibli, and XFR, (have seen other Maserati's and Jags) some as recently as Sunday as well as cars more unlikely to be out dodging cones like a Prius, Audi/Jetta wagons (full size, not an A3), Ferrari 430, mint R32 GTR etc. Met a guy who autocrosses his AMG's at least once a month, sometimes 2-3x a month. I'll see if I can find the local prepped GT3 and GTR both running Hoosiers, they're wicked.

I'd say I see those kinds of cars autocrossing with about the same frequency as I see them driving on the street, of course you're going to see more 86's and Miata's autocrossing with hundreds of thousands of them built vs. the less than a couple thousand/year high end cars you list.

I looked up how many M3's were built, and E90/92/93 data popped up, over 6 years (07-13) there were just under 66,000 M3's produced worldwide, by the beginning of 2015 (less than 3 years in production) there were over 64,000 86's sold in North America alone.

Haven't had the chance to try either the Spark or the 500e (not sure of their availability in Canada), but I agree that the Model S can get up and move in straight lines (had a chance to drive a friend's older model, and it still impressed).

I think it will be some time before it makes sense over broad swathes of North America - Canada is quite a ways behind in terms of availability of supercharging stations.

Better em-pee-gees, cheaper to buy, fix, insure, better resale.
And actually fun to drive.
