Antigravity Small Case Batterys

http://antigravitybatteries.com/?page_id=994
Anybody seen these things before? The biggest one is 720CCA, 24 cell lithium Ion, 5lbs, $459. They have one , 16 cell, 480CCA, 3.2lbs $289. I came across these in a chopper magazine I read, The Horse, They loved the batteries. And made in the USA. These might be a nice weight saving option. I'm no expert but these things seem really cool.

It seams like you would need a special charger as well, which they sell for $65

Sorry to bump an old thread but I find no other posts about these batteries. I found a nice deal on the 24 cell model and dropped it in my existing FT-86 Speed Factory tray. It fits like a glove and spins the motor far faster then the 11lb Deka/Braille/Big Crank agm battery I was previously using. The website lists the weight at 5lbs but it came in at only 3lbs 3ozs on my wife's food scale. It makes for a super lightweight setup yet cranks like the factory battery!

Jeez, seems expensive, how much is a standard AGM battery for our car any how? And what's our stock requirement for cranking amperage?

I didn't pay anything remotely close to that amount and those prices listed are MSRP. They are expensive but for a weight conscious or race build a savings of 26lbs is huge. They're also built in the USA with A123 cells and come with a warranty even when installed in race applications.

I don't know what our starter amperage requirement is but my $73 Penn/Deka rebranded 11lb AGM ext14 battery put out 220cca and started the motor fine throughout the winter. Even running e85 that sometimes required extended or multiple cranks it never left me stranded.

Thanks for the post, can you share where you found the good deal?

You're welcome. I found it on sale at GNH Cycle but the price has since gone up to $388. Still better than the $459 list price though. Honestly the 24 cell battery is pretty overkill for this application. The smaller capacity YTX series batteries appear to use the same case size so they should all drop right in and cost a lot less money.

Update
After extensive testing I cannot recommend these LiFePO4 batteries for use in this application. A few days and a couple of autox events after the initial install I noticed the battery had exibited significant case swelling. Although it still performed flawlessly I contacted Antigravity about a warranty replacement believing faulty cells had caused the issue. I supplied pictures and voltage readings and it was promptly replaced without question. Antigravity definetely stands behind their products!

However, just a couple of days after receiving and installing the replacement battery it too has exhibited the same swelling condition as the first. My research on LiFePO4 batteries indicate these failures are generally caused by overcharging, undercharging or other abuses such as shorting. My units were not shorted and only charged using the car's charging system which the voltage was within normal range. My only thought is the alternator's charging amperage rate is too much for these batteries to handle. Either that or the underhood temperature is too high and causing the cells to overheat. Either way, it would be a mistake for anyone to expect these Antigravity LiFePO4 batteries to survive in our cars.

I posted some pictures below.

I'm interested to hear as well. Shorai uses prismatic LiFePO4 pouches where as Antigravity uses A123 cylindrical LiFePO4 cells so their composition is different. However, neither use a built in battery management system to prevent overcharging/undercharging so both would be subjected to the same operating conditions. I'm pretty disappointed as I was excited to implement this newer battery technology into this platform but it doesn't appear it's a viable option as a drop in replacement.
