Maybe "additives" are added (or not) at the point of retail distribution?

Yeah right, I'm sure the guy behind the counter comes out while the truck from the distributor is there and mixes in Sunoco's special blend... it may be different in other states but here it all comes from the same place.

You're up there @gravitylover -

Hey, @Tcoat , you used to deliver fuel, what's your take on this?

I have no clue about what happens there but here one depot supplies the same fuel to two or three different brands. No additives are added at the station.

Maybe some additives are added at the tanker distribution point?

Top tier fuel is called that for a reason. The fuel at your local Shell station is not the same as x?x? brand, Valero isn't the same as BJ's or Costco. Most of the fuels that are not top tier do come from a single distributor for a region, sometimes even the others do but they're in separate tanks and often use different delivery companies. They can't all advertise different additives, mixes and chemistry and then sell the same thing, there are laws about that...

https://toptiergas.com/FAQConsumer/ Go down the list of questions, some touch on how the rating works and how fuels from the same truck can be different for different companies and some formulations are different from one company to the next.

Never saw any. trying to get volumes for the mix consistent would be a nightmare.

As Grav said I don't think there is any one "rule" that can be applied across the board.

No wonder OPs car is noisy if they are filling the tank with crickets! I typically just get gasoline from gas stations...

Well, OK.

So, we don't know where or when the additives (if any) are added to the gasoline we buy?

I only drove the ruck and poured the fuel into the tank. Don't know where or when additives were added but can say for sure it was not during the loading or unloading stages.

I just made an observation.

I was at my local ARCO station filling my FR-S with cricket free fuel while a double tanker truck was putting gas the stations tanks.

I ask the driver about serving several stations from the same set of doubles. He said he goes to the fuel terminal and fills and then goes to one station and empties his tanks. He then goes back to the terminal and gets another load for another station.

He also said that the folks at the terminal inject the additive(s) while the tanker is filling. The additives depend on which station he is going to deliver to.

Just one representative sample, not replicated.

Your distribution area may differ.
