I think Subaru will pull out. I am sorry but the motor just doesn't have the reliability Toyota needs it to have in my opinion. They got better chassis rigidity and lower CoG with the Supra. My thoughts are an update and new engine going in to keep it in the middle. New MR2 below it?
Plus the BRZ doesn't really fit in with their Eco-dog loving-flannel wearing stereotype of a AWD CUV.

Subaru Toyota Collab on Next Gen 86 Stopped

Where is your data showing the FA20 is unreliable? Forum posts about the few engine failures are a bad way to paint the whole picture when there are well over 100,000 twins out there. Just because you 'feel' it's unreliable doesn't make it so. The 86 is Toyotas most reliable model right now. The BMW B58 is solid but it's worse. |

It would also be the end of the platform since it would take a total redesign of the car to change the engine. If Toyota could have made it on their own from the beginning they would have so no Subaru then no Twins. Toyota has made it clear that it will continue so that means Subaru is still in the game. Oh, and according to the flip flopping sites Subaru has already stated they are still in anyway. LOL "the reliability Toyota needs" from the basically BMW Supra? There is nothing but clickbait speculation about a new MR2. Unless I have missed an announcement from Toyota there isn't even a current concept for one much less anything else.

Pretty sure everyone in the original thread, on page one, took the "rumor" with a grain of salt.

Hard to tell since this thread is actually 6 threads all merged. That is why the order of events seems so weird. There were far far to many people that believed or at least wanted to believe it.

I don't know...based on the new Supra, Toyota could continue to produce the 86...it just might be a truck instead of a sports car.
