Quieting Race Brakes

I recently upgraded to Fedoro 11.1 pads and DBA rotors on my BRZ. I take it out to autocross every other weekend. I also work from home so I don't drive it a whole ton outside of that.

I plan on using the Fedoro pads all the time, not just on the track, but they are extremely noisy. Is there any good way to quiet them down?

Semi-race/Race brake pad bedding instructions

* Please follow these bedding instructions in a safe area. A closed course is best. Do not break the law!

1. Accelerate to about 60 mph and brake at about 50% force down to 20 mph. Repeat 3 times
2. Accelerate to 80 mph and brake at about 80% force, down to 30 mph. Repeat until you feel a hint of fade and/or begin to smell the brakes.
3. Keep rolling, staying off of the brakes, until the brakes have had a chance to completely cool down. This may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes or more, depending on the vehicle and conditions.

* Most race pads will produce minimal noise after proper bedding. Endurance pads generally will continue to make noise, even after bedding.
* Remember that you will probably need to re-bed pads after a fresh pad swap
* If the brake pedal feels the same, but the car doesn’t stop, your pads have faded. Let them cool down!
* If the brake pedal goes soft, your fluid has boiled. Time to bleed the brakes!

I did take them out for a good bedding session very similar to this. Maybe I'll go out and do it again.

Please keep in mind that the 1.11 is an enduro pad, and will quiet down, but not become silent. You might want to consider swapping to a blank rotor and a sprint type race pad, or even downgrade to a hybrid type pad.

Ferodo DS2500, Winmax W3, Carbotech AX6, Project Mu B-Force are all great AutoX pads that can be bedded to be silent.

I don't expect them to be silent. Just not ear splittingly, wake up the neighbors loud.

Ferodo DS1.11 pads are fantastic, but they are endurance racing pads. They will never be particularly quiet when rolling around at cold temperatures, even when bedded in. Most times they sound like a freight train coming. My advice would be to switch to the DS2500 for street/autoX use. They have excellent feel to them, but are much more 'civilized' for easy use. The DS1.11 is really geared towards pure track use.

DS2500's are pretty much the perfect pad for daily driving and autox. Mine were almost dead silent even without bedding, and have way better bite/feel than stock pads.

You'll never overheat them in an autox setting unless you're riding the brakes constantly. Mine have stood up to lapping days just fine as well.

Yes they dust a lot, but I'll take lots of dust over a pad that is much harsher on rotors.

My DS2500s have survived 5 track days and around 10000 miles street use.

Tons of dust, but when I'm driving I tend to forget they are in there.

Feels just like stock (minus the dust).

In addition to the bedding, did you re-install the shims or go shimless?

When I installed my Winmax last weekend I initially put them in without the shims that come with the factory pads. Squealed like crazy at low speeds even after bedding.

Took them out and put the shims on with some grease and they are now quiet.

I went shimless. They were pretty tight without the shims and I wanted to ensure they didn't rub. Maybe I'll try again with the shims.
