lowering spring install

This seems pretty outrageous and just had to share... I've always intended to do the install myself, I was just curious to see how much a certain shop would charge. No joke... $1098.13!! All labor... I always like getting quotes like this to remind me of why I do the work myself.

Before I went down to darrendriven's house in Portland I went to Toyota for a quote. 10 hours. 2.5 a corner. When he told me that I laughed and walked out. Darren did it with jacks in 53 minutes!

Similar experience. Just got back from the dealership for service boost work. I previously bought TRD springs from them for $235, which seemed decent. Asked them to install springs at the same time as oil change and whatnot. I guess they didn't want to do it. Gave a quote of $1175.15. I LOL'd and said no.

I'm a service advisor at Lexus and I checked the labor time on the install it is 7.5 hours but it really takes a master tech about 3 hours including the alignment. Don't know why it is so much labor but it is. The only part that is a pain in the ass is compressing the springs. I am going to do mine myself and save the money just wander if I should just do a coil over set instead?

I do a lot of work for locals, and on these cars lowering springs or coilover install with a "string*" alignment is $400. If you bring me POS parts it's $500, if you buy the suspension through me it's $350. I've found the price variance helps a lot ensuring people run decent stuff, and ensures I don't have to make adjustments later on due to a junky component failure, or doing it again because people aren't happy with it.

I use one of these, and it saves SO MUCH time setting toe compared to actually using a string. It's paid for itself in times I've had to get out from under the car again and again and again: http://www.killertools.com/shop/shop...art903m-detail

Read the 2 DIYs, you can take the stock springs off and install the new springs using the cars weight instead of the compressors. Still safe and way less work.

Not bad, I mean for alignment and setting ride height it really does take a shop hours so not an overcharge. More so I just do my own work usually so $550 compared to diy install and a $80 custom alignment was a bit of a jump lol

I wish I had a garage to do custom alignments, but Im also not detail oriented enough to do it enough to warrant the tools anyway haha

Totally understood, not a lot of people are, (I'm saying that based on the quality of work I see coming in on a *LOT* of jobs. It makes me rethink what I see on a lot of forum posts... "This job can be completed by even the most shadetree of mechanics in a few short hours" Well friends, I'm here to tell you I've seen TERRIBLY botched strut bar installs. It happens, we all have to start somewhere, and not everyone is cut out to turn a wrench. Heck, some days I have to sit back and close my eyes and contemplate fire saleing all my snap on stuff.

Down in Eugene I got quotes ranging from $600 just for spring install, no alignment. Then I called the guy at the alignment shop, he quoted $340 with alignment. He said if I installed the springs he'd charge $85 for alignment. I think he will get the job.
