The IS200t already uses the 8 speed I'm sure they can use that on next gen and then program it for the Twins powerband.

I could see Subaru branching from Toyota and see things happen especially since STI is going to be its own entity.

True, but by then Subaru will be free to do whatever they want with the BRZ and who knows what they might come up with.

Jack it up, make it AWD, and slap a CVT in there?

Costs are spread over volumes that the 86 will never touch. So for other MFGs it's easier to offer more power & amenities for less cost. Whereas with the 86 Toyota and Subaru put the money where it counts (a truly dedicated sports car chassis) and left it up to the buyers to add power in the aftermarket.
We are paying for all the R&D costs :P
Component wise, this car is pretty bare bones. The WRX comes with an extra diff, a turbo, intercooler and ducting and uses a lot more material, yet it's priced the same (probably also due to the larger volume of sales).

What is this article about??? It talks of the BRZ being the softer version... is this case in the States?

The two have always had a different suspension setup. The BRZ has been softer in the rear, the FR-S harder, and vice-versa in the front. Overall ride quality though, I don't think was noticeably different.

I'm not sure how the new suspension setups compare though.

BRZ gives you slightly better interior refinement climate control, heated seats.

UK cars also have the different suspension set-up. I would say that the Toyota has the better ICE.

That changed in 2015. Both had identical spring rates.
