Subarus are immune to depreciation

During my downtime at work and lunch, I go on cars.com for giggles. The Wrx and Sti hold value like no other! How are 3 year old cars still at new msrp? The even older ones are crazier and they got 125k on the odometer.

Yep when I traded-in my STI hatch, I was able to get back nearly what I paid for it. If I had sold it privately, I would have broken even or possibly turned a small profit.

A lot of kids grew up revering the STI nameplate, and now that they have jobs and can afford a used one, they're fueling demand and driving up used prices for them.

I'm not sure I am following you on this one? If you follow that community at all, you know that the value of those cars only goes up each passing year, especially as more get wrecked or find their way being shipped over seas. Ford made a low volume (around 4K vehicles) specialty/exotic car. Of course the price is only going to climb each year. I also believe about 1/3 of all FGTs have been wrecked by owners since the production line shutdown in 06. Supply and demand!

I believe that was @HeadBangers point, they are worth more now than when new.
That said, I wouldn't put a limited run high price car in the same league as a WRX or Sti that is holding its value. A good percentage of the Fords were purchased on speculation anyway, which is going to help drive the price. Not so with the Subarus.

Of course they're worth more now than they were new, that was kind of my point based on my reasons listed above. I'm sure there were quite a few "collectors" who purchased them based off of desire for "collectability and/or investment" but a suprising amount of the owners actually bought them to drive and/or track them. I know a few people with them and having watched from the sidelines there are a lot of those guys running FGTs boosted to 1,000 horsepower and above. About the only ones that have depreciated are the salvage title and/or extremely high mileage ones with issues.

I think we are agreeing, maybe just coming from a different direction. I do agree with the Subaru WRX/STI sentiments but they are definitely not the only community that seems to suffer from delusional used pricing schemes. Heck, I remember when I got my 2004 S2000 (used back in 05) that people were asking almost MSRP for used AP1s! I found my 04, (with factory hard top) with only 3K on the odometer and paid 10K less than sticker not including the price of the optional OEM hard top which if I remember correctly was around 4K from Honda! I guess the point is, if you are patient and shop around there's always deals to be had on used vehicles, even FGTs (I saw a red/white stripe FGT go for 130K a few years back, I bet whoever bought it could sell it now for 150-160K).
