Affect, yes. Significantly, no. Just don't screw up while doing it. Even going down to 5th you will be in the dip for about a 100th of a second or so. For that matter is it even a dip if that is where you hit when downshifting? Not like you were climbing and then it dropped off for a fraction of a second.

That would be OK ...... from time to time.

Contrary to popular belief, by some, the synchronizers are not made out of glass .....

True, I guess planning ahead is always the best remedy anyway. Sequential shifting from here on out for me though.

Over the years of driving MT, low torque, cars that if you are in 6th on a two lane road and think about passing, it's safest to shift down into 5th, pull out from behind the vehicle you are thinking about passing, assess the situation and either:

* pull back in (not enough room to safely pass)

* if you have a comfortable distance, pass in 5th gear

* if time and distance looks to be tight, pull it down in 4th, mash on the gas, hope the hell your time and distance calculation is correct AND the vehicle you're passing doesn't speed up.

If you're on a freeway passing, put it in 5th, just leave it in 5th and pass ........ what's your big hurry anyway ......

All this reminds me of back-in-the-day, driving a VW bug on the three lane highways in France. The middle lane is a passing lane, either way, for whoever gets into the lane first .......

So, here you are in your VW following a truck, you pull out to take a look see, don't see anyone in the center lane, downshift to third and mash on the gas. All of a sudden, in the third lane ahead of you, coming fast is a large Citroen.

If you can't get back in behind the truck, AND everyone is paying attention, ya'll make a four lane highway out of a three lane highway .......

THE END

1. People love closing gaps on this car. never happened to me as often before.
2. YES! I am from there and learned to drive on French streets... Man this car would be the most fun there.. Quality roads, good drivers and lots of roundabouts.. I wish.

The way a lot the US guys talk you would think they are made of sugar and it's raining.

I think what upsets them more isn't block shifting (even without rev matching) but forcing the thing into gear. Syncro's require an amount of time to do their thing. While they are doing their thing they resist pushing past them.

Offer the lever, gently, to the gear and wait for a fraction of a second and it will take the thing out of your hand when it's ready. Actually feels like it sucks the stick into gear itself.

That's opposed to ham-fisted-ly slamming it into gear like an ape bench pressing!

Think of it like penetrating your loved one. If you just slam it on in there, you'll upset her and have to rebuild her gearbox.

For sure, for sure ....... the shifter knows HOW to get there; all it needs from you is to know WHERE you want it to go ......

As far as your analogy to having sex ....... I'll defer to ol @Cole ....... I figure he is the "slam it in there" type .......
