Toyota Yaris GR Sport revealed ahead of Paris debut

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/m...ad-paris-debut

Quote:
Toyota has officially revealed the Yaris GR Sport, a warm supermini that takes inspiration from the Yaris GRMN, ahead of its motor show debut at Paris in October.

Due on sale from late 2018, it will mark the first time Toyota has launched a GR Sport trim level in Europe, having launching the Japan-only GT86 GR Sport in July.

The Yaris GR Sport uses the same 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain as the standard Yaris, developing a combined 99bhp output from the four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor.

Toyota has instead focused its performance upgrades on suspension, with Sachs Performance dampers and a solid anti-roll bar for added rigidity. Ground clearance has also been reduced by 11mm compared with the standard Yaris.

The GR Sport sits on exclusive black 17in alloy wheels, which are fitted with the same 205/45 R17 Bridgestone Potenza RE50 tyres as the Yaris GRMN.

Available exclusively as a five-door, it also shares its exterior styling with the Yaris GRMN, including a rear spoiler and black colour scheme for the roof, front grille, door mirrors and door mouldings.

Interior tweaks include GR-branded sports seats and the same three-spoke steering wheel as the GT86. GR logos have also been added to the digital instrument cluster.

Prices have yet to be confirmed, but the GR Sport is likely to carry a premium over the £20,150 top-end Yaris Bi-tone.

Is it just me or is Yaris and Sport an oxymoron? Or maybe it's like what a Grandpa uses for his little grandson "Hey, Sport, how you doing?"

I would love one of these things. When I read the review of an early development model in evo magazine, they were genuinely surprised with how hardcore it was. Noisy, harsh, and pretty quick for a supermini. The production model has a quieter exhaust (apparently after several journos complained) and a more refined feel but still has that crazy character. Have there been any other supercharged hatchbacks?

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm thinking of the GRMN version.. that one has 209 hp and a supercharger. This one is the 1.5L. Should read before I comment lol

As a Yaris owner, I disapprove of this car. It'll actually be slower than the non-hybrid model and my current Yaris will most likely out perform it.

can't wait for reviews that say how slow it is and then how forum jockeys say they don't get the car.

It is just you. There is a one make Yaris race is Japan that is always highly popular. With an aftermarket suspension the Yaris is an awesome car. Many were autocrossed when they first came out and they did really well. Also they've done really really well in SCCA solo as well, one of the editor's of the SCCA magazine has won nationals with a Yaris.

In race trim it is a 2000 lb front wheel drive miata.

Well at least I'm consistent because there is nothing in that sentence that does anything for me, so I continue to stand alone!

The Honda guys will love this car. Front-wheel drive. Sport suspension. Red accent colors. Tiny engine. I mean damn-this will be the new Civic.

That said-I think it's cute. I'd rock that. But then I thought the iQ was cute too.
