FR-S/GT86 the First of Three New Toyota Sportscars

Quote:
Two more sports cars planned by the Japanese automaker with FR-S/GT86 to sit in the middle.

If you're a fan of the Scion FR-S (aka Toyota GT86 or Subaru BRZ), then you'll be thrilled with the latest news from Top Gear. Speaking with FR-S chief engineer Tetsuya Tada at an international media event in the Philippines, Top Gear discovered that the nimble little sportscar is just the first of a trio Toyota has planned. While you might expect that to translate to two more upscale models, the GT86 will actually ultimately emerge in the middle of the sportscar trifecta.

"The first is more mass-market and cheaper than the 86," Tada revealed. "And the third is more upmarket than the 86." Still in the conceptualization stage, the pair of new Toyota sports cars are five years from production, with the higher-end model potentially to stand as the successor to the Supra. The lower-end model could take up the place of the MR2, but likely not with a mid-engine layout. With the FR-S sold in the United States as a Scion and the LFA as a Lexus, the jury's still out on which brand the pair will be marketed under, though.

An MR2 project partnered with Lotus would be sweeeet. It could make for a nice entry level car for lotus and a great mid level mid engine option for Toyota! I just wonder if Lotus would big enough to invest in another car even with shared costs.

If they bring back the Celica, it's needs to be turbo and AWD! Should be a nice contender for cars such as Focus RS, Type-R, Golf R, STI and Volester N. Also, if they bring the MR2 back, I want to see a 2.0L turbo mid-engine (260hp preferably).

If they make and MR2 successor, i believe it would be benchmarked with the Alpine A110, which would make it more expensive than the 86. I say that based on this snippet from a jalopnik article:

"He’s keen too on the new Renault-built Alpine A110, having driven it back-to-back with the Supra just that morning on track: “It was very good. For daily use, I’m not so sure, but on the track it was great.”"

They could always have 2 engine options like the 2nd gen MR2 did. Just an opinion.

Yeah I think a small mid engine car would slot in between the 86 and the Supra. It would be small and lightweight so it wouldnt need the power of the Supra but still hopefully come boosted to place it appropriately between the two cars.

with an AWD Celica GT4 makes sense to partner with Subaru again.

now a MR2 is interesting. Lotus, Honda, and Mazda would all make good joint ventures with.

This is (hopefully) good news. But it does ask several questions. I think much will be answered when we get firm pricing for the new Supra. Because at the moment this is what I'm assuming:

GT86: $25,000 - $33,000
Supra: $35,000 (4cyl) - $50,000 (6cyl)

Where would a hypothetical MR2 fit in here? If it were an ultralight with a simple 120-160 hp engine I could see it fitting in below the GT86 in price and performance. As for Celica...the world definitely needs more liftback coupes, but I feel like that's way too much overlap with the GT86.

Another option I could see is the Supra being priced from $40-55,000, and the revised 2nd gen GT86 getting a bit more power and moving up market a little, say around $5,000. So roughly $30,000 - $40,000. That would make a lot of room for a 3rd sports car, Celica or MR2.

I'd love for the MR2 to be an Alpine competitor but price-wise I think that would compete directly with the Supra.

Oh please let it be Mazda....
Maybe Toyota can do what they couldn't: Make rotaries both reliable and less thirsty.

I believe the Supra's low end price will end up being in the 50-60k's, so maybe an mr2 with two possible engine options could be 35k and 40k.

Who know what car prices will be in another ten year when and if they ever build it.

The Supra's pricing won't be anywhere near the BMW M2's or Cayman's. Because really, that's worse than foolish.

They're not going to be able to sell it at a significant discount either because its still 90% BMW unless the BMW price is inflated by quite a large margin.
