A gasoline engine has always compromises. When's the last time we saw a high reving 4 banger with tons of torque NA? It's either one or the other.
When it comes down to it, I don't care about the dyno curve, or what the actual numerical value for ft/lbs of torque is. Nor do I want "tons of torque"--I love the Si engine, and that's a torque-less wonder.

I just want the engine to feel "fun"--and that deadspot definitely isn't. It's as though the car's always bogging at 4k. Granted the rest of the car is a ball of fun (chassis, suspension tuning, lightness, etc), but my point again is it's the characteristic of the engine, not the power that's the issue. Output for output sake doesn't necessarily fix the issue.

That's more than 10% of it's previous redline with ZERO horsepower gain...but more torque because of the added stroke.

Actually you've got that backwards. It doesn't even use DI in the lower RPM's from what the toyota documentation states. It's Port injection in the lower RPM's and then the DI comes on around 3k.
