New member. Need suggestions/thoughts on mods I want to do.
Hey guys car semi-noob here. Just bought a 2017 Toyota 86! Has about 2300 miles on it now.
So far only switched out the trans and diff oil with Gear 300 and dimple magnetic plugs for the drain and fill plugs for both trans and diff. Next thing I have on my list are 18x9.5 +35 Volk te37 SL wheels wrapped in Michelin 255/35 PSS. Then KW V3 coilovers. After that headers and exhaust. Looking at Ace EL merge header with 350 collector and Invidia r400 exhaust. On to the tune, I have no idea on where to start with what tune to go with but have looked at delicious tuning. Any opinions on any of these mods? Is there anywhere I'm going wrong? Thanks guys. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |

Drive the car until you find something you think could use replacing.
Literally no sense in throwing money at the car until you know what you "need". Source: Someone who threw a lot of money at the car before I realized what I actually wanted was way more simple than my "goals" |

You will think we are all sad and unimaginative pessimistic haters for saying this. Most of us have been through the experience.
You are asking about a direction without stating your goal. What are your goals? Money aside. Do you want to mod for sake of modding? Do you want to have an IG following and hard park? Do you enjoy handling aspects, do you want to go into motor-sporting activities/driving this car as Toyota gods intended to? While it sure is fun to throw money and "forum cred/quality/race" parts on the car, I agree with Cole in a way. But if you're going down that rabbit hole, do it exponentially, savour each piece separately. Drive the car, drive it on the street as appropriate, drive it in abandoned parking lot at night if you feel naughty and assume the risks of that, or just plain go join auto-x, hpde or whatever activity. Research alignment, understand how that affects driving experience. You will notice an immediate difference just by spending first $100 on that. Tune the stock engine/header first if you want. See what that feels like. Then maybe go further for header? Got bored of that? Go FI? The parts you are listed are all excellent quality pieces, community darlings sort of thing, but if you slap all of that on, you might miss out on the fun of "getting there". |

Personally, drive it stock for half a year, or a year. Then decide to do the basics.
Everything sounds good except for your tires and wheel choices. Mpss are dog shit. (Personal opinion, don't get butt hurt) But really exhaust and tunes are too much money for little gain for the amount of power. gain. Better off going Turbo/super charged. Just my 2 cents.

That is a lot of tire you are proposing for a stock car. Personally I think that'd sap a lot of fun out of the driving experience.
I agree with the posts above - drive it first and decide what you don't like about it, set some goals, work on changing those things. Unless you have unlimited monies. |

On the rear, they're great. Where the stock tires would cut loose, these just hold on like I'm on rails. This car still has plenty of power to break them loose intentionally if you want, but I can take corners with the PSS much more aggressively than the stock tires could handle. Since I personally think drifting is kind of stupid, the difference in cornering was a huge improvement for me. HOWEVER, on the front it sucks ass. The steering went from feeling light and nimble to heavy and mushy. The effect is not as bad at higher speed, but for just driving around town a lot of the live thrill of the car's handling is sucked right out of it. About the only good thing I can say about them on the front is that lift throttle oversteer isn't an issue with that fat contact patch. If I had to do it again (and at some point I probably will), I would either go with a narrower square setup or a staggered setup with narrower rims up front. I feel like the car can handle the wide tires in the rear, but the steering is deadened so much it was a considerable disappointment. BTW, those wide rims all around look awesome. But the looks aren't enough to overcome that disappointment in the steering wheel. |

Obviously people are mentioning the wheels.... take the advice with grains of salt. It all depends on your goal for performance.
The mods in general are a good progression, but plan your FI method now, since obviously the headers won't work with a turbo kit. Power gains NA are not impressive for the money spent so plan your power mods around your eventual choice in FI. |

Don't mod just because you want to mod. No point in blowing all your hard-earned money only to find out you don't like what it's become.

Slight change of wording. "Don't mod because other people tell you to mod". If somebody want's to mod that is fine but they shouldn't do it just because they read that is what everybody else is doing.
