PLease explain to me why im the *sshole

Hey so im still learning tuner etiquette because as ive learned there are a ton of unwritten rules and codes of conduct. So why did this happen.
I live in a hilly area with some nice roads where cops are rarely looking for speeding(fortunately). I spot this AWESOME EVO with a whole rally look. SUPER clean! I was trying to speed up to him to compliment him because I really liked his ride. Got up to him and put it in manual revved and gave him a thumbsup! no response so i casually drove off. he pulls up to me at a light and rolls down his window and before I can say hey man nice car! He screams! IF YOU EVER GET THAT CLOSE TO ME AGAIN I WILL FUCK YOU UP!.... I was just trying to say nice car bro. oh btw his license plate was was STY LOL. obviously not lolworthy.
SO.... what did i do here? i thought most people were down to zip around a bit? its not like i was doing 100 or anything??
yea i know cool story bro

Picture this...
You're driving around, minding your own business and some guy rapidly pulls up behind you and starts revving his engine. What is going through your head?

Its nice that you wanted to compliment a fellow enthusiast about their car but here's a tip. If you don't get the opportunity to calmly and politely compliment someone (like at a stoplight), then just let it go, think to yourself "nice car" and go about your way.

Had you done something like that to me I would have likely had my 9mm out of sight but in my hand when I pulled up to the light not knowing what your intentions were. I wouldn't have threatened you like he did however.

Bizarre. I read in the news a few weeks ago, some guy got beaten to death outside a club after telling someone he had nice rims. I guess you never know what you're going to get.

Objectively, sounds like you were trying to race him. Other than that he definitely overreacted.

I see ur point however I live in Laguna Beach if u need a 9mm here you are beyond paranoid.

In regards to the why would I even rev comment... Maybe ur in the wrong car bro. I bought mine for fun. If I wanted to buy a car to show off that I have old money and no taste I would have bought a c class.

Please don't rev at someone you don't know. It's just flat out rude. There's no other way to interpret some stranger revving at you other than "I wanna race you" or "my car's faster than yours". It's a douche move.

So you think revving is the polite thing to do?

The people you rev'd at were probably too mature and just ignored you. I shake my head at teens and immature adults who rev their engine for attention. Kinda like the Harley guys revving the crap out of their motors when they damn well know their bikes are fuel injected.

Umm... The thing you did wrong was rev to get attention.

I dunno it just seems not a mature thing to do and sort of reminds me of all the annoying folks in BMWs, Audis, Civics, etc that try to rev their cars next to me to get me to look over at stop lights. All the while I'm thinking, "Ugh.. I'm just going to the grocery store..."

I agree. A tiny horn tap is a better way to get someones attention, but 9 times out of 10 there's no reason to get their attention anyway other than to be narcissistic. Just appreciate their car from a distance. If there happens to be a situation where you make eye contact at a stop-light or something, then a thumbs up is usually appreciated. Swerving and revving and being aggressive is never a good way to get someones attention.

Based on this story however, it does sound like the other guy over-reacted. It just proves that not everyone is friendly.
