Talking 2016 frs engine

I have a question. if I replace my 2013 frs engine with a 2016 frs engine. Because I spun a bearing will I have problems with the ecm. Is this something I should be able to do with out any compatability issues or these engines are too different. I would appreciate any advice from anyone. Thank you.

No problem. It is a direct swap. Try to get one with the same type transmission as you though or there are some things that have to be changed.

Somewhere in the forum, this has been discussed. The person swapping the newer motor had to turn off some CELs and some other things. The alternator and some other stuff is different and triggers a few CEL problems. I'll try and dig it up when I'm in front of a computer.


From what I recall he es able to swap the motor successfully with no major problems.

I have done the swap. But after driving for a month and a half a P0019 come up. Than I replace the cam sensor nothing changed than I took it to the dealer for a better understanding than they told me I have to replace the ECM. But they nowhere not sure that would fix it the ECM costs $1100. Than I called a second dealer they said that the would reflash the ECM for$150.00 I agreed for the reflash. I took the car to have my ECM reflashed I got a call later. The master mechanic said he had to put in a 2016 ECM but than my 2013 transmission computer would not communicate with the 2016 ECM than I would have to put in a 2016 transmission computer that at that point he was not sure if my 2013 transmisión was going to work with the 2016 transmission computer. So his final recommendation was to put back in a 2013 engine to solve my P0019 code problem. So after all that I don't see a difference between the 2013 engine and the 2016 engine. it was running great for almost two months. I want to thank you all that responded with a solution I hope I can find a solution to my problem because so far I'm not getting any suppor from scion.

I'll be going from a 2013 to a 2015 engine in the near future, this is the only information I've found so far but will let you know if I find anything else:

Could you elaborate on this? I have a MT car and an AT engine to put in it.
There is a different oil line inside and the MT has a blanking plate where the AT vacuum pump goes. Of course the flywheel would need to be changed.

I swapped from a 2012 to a later motor probably 2015 or 2016 after spinning a bearing. The only external difference was the oil and water temp sensors had different plugs on the motor loom. If the loom on your new motor is in good condition then that probably won't bother you. I did use my original DI ECU rather than the one that came with my replacement motor but I have been told it shouldn't matter. It has been in the car for 8 or 9 months now and I haven't had a single CEL.

Glad to hear it, I'm planning to use the old ECU as well. Wonder what the OP used?

Guy swapped motors as per this thread no issues was manual, loks like your is auto but should be same deal

AFAIK all the DI computers the one under the bonnet bolted to side of engine are same and dont need codining into security

The ecu hardware are all the same auto or manual from 2012-2016 not 100% on 2017 but likey same as well.

However you will ned to fladh in the corrdct ecu calibration\tune for your car

If your just changing engine and not swapping between auto to manual just uee same ecu and calibration

If you do get new ecu you would need to code it into security, it easy and flash it with coreect ecu calibration.

If you do the swap use all the 13 sensors and hardware including the harness on your 16 motor and you should be fine

P0019 usually means a cam gear issue, how many miles are on the engine?
If I were you I would take it to Outfront Motorsports and have them replace the gear. Ask for Ozzy

Everything in red is a bunch of crap find another tech who knows this platform....


A 13 ecm will work fine with a 13 flash and your trans will work fine also. Its not like a kidney transplant and the car rejects it.
Things to consider are if the engine was ever ran low on oil or the oil was not changed it will smoke a cam gear.
also consider a ecm off of ebay for 150 bucks if you want try a ecm swap first. the ecm has been known to cause this but most the time its the gear.

So if I understand correctly, you only need to flash a new calibration if you are swapping in an ecu from a different car or using the same ecu and changing the transmission type? I'll be using the same transmission and ecu on the new engine so it sounds like it should work as is.

Are the differences in sensors between model years significant enough that this is necessary, or is it more of a precaution? The new engine has most of the sensors installed so I wasn't originally planning on swapping them all over.

By the way, I don't know how the thanks feature works on this board but I really do appreciate all the help from you guys.
