I used the 17 lb Braille no-weight AGM for a couple years. It always started but sometimes when it was really cold, it barely made it. If you leave your lights on with the engine off for 5-10 min, it will no longer start. And after about 2 years, the battery loses so much energy, you have to replace it. I now use the 21 lb version and it seems to be more forgiving.

So another two months have passed... are you still happy with the smaller battery? See, I'm thinking about doing the same but am not yet decided on the new battery's capacity. I'm most concerned about those times when one does not drive the car and the battery empties itself. I will most likely drive my GT not more than twice a week, sometimes maybe only on the weekends. So any smaller battery should give me say 10 days of bridge time that I need not drive the car. I'm very diligent to always turn off all obvious power consumption like stereo, radio, air con, lights etc. whenever I turn off the engine, but some electronics is always running, obviously. I also understand that in winter a more powerful battery makes sense. Well, I guess you do not have this problem in Perth AUS!! Basically I would just like to ask you a bit about the driving pattern and the down times that your GT is submitted to. Do you drive it every day? Once a week? Rather many shorter trips or fewer longer ones? Thank you very much! |

Hi,
The battery is very good. Haven't had the need to use the battery tender. Always starts first go. I drive my car pretty much every day(for the past month) as the weather is nice. If I don't drive it, it's probably about 2 full days which I don't drive it. If I drive it to go out/go to work.. I'm usually driving it for over 20mins at a time too. One time I accidentally left my interior light on overnight(its LED) and I managed to start the car no problem at all.

If I were to switch to a Shorai LFX14L2-BS12 battery, would I experience issues running the car and listening to stock stereo? I'm confused with all the mentioning of smaller batteries and stereos being troublesome in this thread.
Much thanks in advance!

Lol I went the opposite way...
Diehard Platinum Group 35. Rebadged Odyssey battery so it is AGM, and has insane cranking power (740 CCA). Heavy though, 38 lbs. It's not racecar, but I've been having issues starting the car and three places said my OEM battery is bad. Don't want to get stranded. The bonus is that my car should start in almost every climate. I believe the stiffened suspension shook my battery bad. I read these things don't like to be shook. 20130308-DieHardBattery-005 by VictorN07, on Flickr

However, you will rely on the battery to keep you going if you decide to listen to the radio or turn your AC on with the engine off. A battery that is rated low may have a hard time starting your car if you do stuff with the engine off. I considered a lightweight battery, and most of them look up to the task of getting you going reliably. However most of them match the stock battery performance and I wanted something a bit more so I decided to go with a big drop-in replacement.

Thanks for the input. I never use the electronics after the engine's off so the lightweight batteries are still a go.

An Autocraft Group 51R battery is smaller and weights 2 pounds less than the stock Panasonic battery. The Autocraft Gold Group 35 is listed as the replacement and it weighed 38 pounds.

My battery just died and I can't shell out ~$200 for the Shorai I want atm. I'm looking for something cheap to last a month or two and your lawn and garden idea seems perfect. If it works that is! |

Works fine, cranks to start easy, and seems 15 pounds lighter. I ended up getting a Lawn & Garden from walmart with 275 cca, cost $30 plus $12 core charge. I'll run it until it fails then get my Shorai! |
