Clutch Masters FX400 Review

If you are in the market for a great clutch and flywheel combo for your FR-S/BRZ then Clutch Masters has what you are looking for. After we maxed the stock clutch setup around 300whp, we contacted the guys at Clutch Masters and discussed the best option for our Turbo FR-S. For both the current and future plans with this vehicle we deemed it necessary to select the FX400 6 Puck Sprung option with torque capacity around 500ft lbs. They do offer a couple of other options for those wanting either a little more torque or a little less. All are priced very similar.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...Clutch+Masters

FX100 225 Torque
FX300 335 Torque
FX400 500 Torque
FX500 525 Torque

After receiving the clutch we compared its weight with flywheel vs stock and they were able to shave roughly 7lbs off from the stock system and offer greater torque capacity! Overall appearance is very similar to other clutch manufacturers on the market, nothing fancy but no corners cut either. We installed the clutch in under 5 hours and had zero install issues. Everything lined up perfectly as if it were stock. We had several other goodies we were installing at the same time but couple of days later we tested the clutch on the dyno and no more clutch slip! Currently holding over 400hp and 300ft lbs. Apart from holding the power the next biggest improvement was in pedal feel. We were not huge fans of the stock wimpy pedal feel and so the slight increase in pedal stiffness provides a more responsive connection to the car.

is the pedal really just a bit stiff or much stiffer, i had a clutch master in a past car and it was rock stiff, hated it.. made it impossible to drive in heavy traffic

unfortunately that is all up to personal opinion, I have an 03 Civic Hybrid that has a stiffer stock pedal than the FR-S did and a 95 Turbo Mr2 with an ACT 6 puck sprung that feels stiffer than the Clutch Masters FX400. This pedal feel falls in the middle of not too soft and not too hard.

We drove the car in 5'oclock rush hour stop and go traffic last week and had no issues, wasn't tiring or anything. Its nothing compared to the race clutches we set up.

I've had their clutch in a couple cars, and it seems to be hit or miss. Still, they do tend to hold up well. I'll be watching these threads to see how others compare the feel, for when I change my clutch in a year or so.

^ you are only an hour north so when the time comes feel free to swing by the shop and hop in the car and see what you think of the pedal feel

Thanks sounds great! I may be heading down past that way on the 12th or 13th next month. I may see if the wife would mind making a quick stop to check out the car. Like I siad before, i've heard great thigns about your products, and have been seriously considering your turbo kit in the near future as one of my top choices.

I run the FX300 and FX400 in all my customer cars.

Had the FX300 in my Subie back in 2006 then upgraded to the FX400 when I started making big boy power. Would never use another clutch.

I'm very happy we were able to get the Exedy clutch in Don's car but I'm a clutch master guy at heart.

I used several ACT clutches in DSMs and Miatas and never cared for them. I tried the CM FX300 in my Gen3 MR2 with 20g and loved it, much more OEM type pedal effort, grabbed nicely but still had smooth engagement in normal driving.

When it comes to quality, I've NEVER had an issue with clutchmasters systems, and would say they are very high quality for the product and price.
