Reason for high price? See above. Seriously though, I'd probably remove the console from the car, mask and coat it in mold release and then lay up fiberglass or similar to make the curve I want, then use that as the mold to do a second layup (leaves thickness for upholstery) then upholster it. Not much to it except a crap ton of time and expensive materials. |

May have sounded like a silly question, but I've been coming up with a lot of designs on my own and was wondering how you would implement them. It's one thing to render a model, another to begin production.

I would probably make a replica of the center console (maybe slightly undersized to allow for the thickness of upholstery or whatever coating I might use, then just start making them out of fiberglass. I would make about a dozen of those before doing anything else, then while they cure go do the actual arm resting bit (upholstery and foam over either MDF or a sheet of polyethylene). DEFINITELY have someone else handle the skins for the arm rest, be they sewn leather or leatherette or whatever material you like. If you could find a manufacturer and the price was right I would have these made by someone else, but since I was never planning on volume like that, I can't help you there. Finally, just order your slides from mcmaster carr and bolt it all together! Alternatively you could make the fiberglass lower segment and then upholster directly on top of it to make the removable hole cover that some have requested - it would eliminate a few pieces but I do not think it would be much easier in the end, since you are still dealing with the fiberglass. You definitely can't justify the cost of tooling needed to mold plastics with the anticipated volume. |

How much do you think it would actually cost you and how much do you think we should pay you for it. If it's reasonable i'm sure we could probably get enough people for a limited run group buy.

I wouldn't mind a one off custom permanently mounted armrest. Unlike most of this crowd of "want shit cheap but dont like ebay specials" people i will pay for quality. Personally what i would like to see is a full replacement of the entire center console made specifically for an armrest, instead of trying to jerry rig something into the existing spot.
I'm fine with vanity parts costing a bit more than average since they aren't really for everyone, performance parts on the other hand...everyone and their grandmother is making parts for this thing so prices will eventually calm down. For the people expecting prices to be cheaper...this car isn't a Honda Civic and you are early adopters...this is normal. Don't worry though soon you'll be able to buy all the knock off parts to your hearts desire. |

I have never made anything like this before, but I will definitely figure out a theoretical price for those of you wanting fancy things

I guess it's a perspective thing for me. Five hundred bucks would get me 2 or 3 tires so I have a hard time dropping that on an armrest accessory, especially when the tunnel sits high enough to work fairly well on its own.
I'd like to have something to finish it off, and the one in the other thread for example looks nice and would probably raise the height just enough to match the armrest on the door. That being said, I wouldn't pay five or even two hundred for that one either. |

I would pay like 100 dollars at the very most. It is an armsrest not something that deserves a cost of over 100 $$
