No, I don't see the issue. It was a statement of fact.

Everything that was freaking brilliant was freaking brilliant. Conversely, that which was ordinary is not/was not freaking brilliant. How could it be otherwise?

Here's another example:
It is blue.
What's blue?
Everything that is blue is blue and not any other colour.
The only confusion arise is when someone says "the blues" because then we don't if they are referring to all the blues colours or the style of music.
