Exclamation 2017 Toyota 86 - new name, styling, and more power

http://pressroom.toyota.com/releases...nyias-2016.htm

This is official. Press release:

March 17, 2016

TORRANCE, Calif., March 17, 2016
– With its new home comes a new name and more. The former Scion FR-S will debut as the 2017 Toyota 86 at the New York International Auto Show with interior and exterior changes, as well as suspension and powertrain upgrades. The new Toyota 86 will go on sale at all Toyota dealerships this fall.

“When we announced the transition of the Scion models to Toyota we hadn’t planned on changing the names of our cars, but by popular demand, for our sports car, we decided to adopt the global name of 86,” said Toyota Division Group Vice President, Bill Fay. “Enthusiasts have a strong association with the front-engine, rear-drive heritage of the ‘hachi-roku’ and the dynamic performance it offers.”

In addition to the Toyota 86 name change, two other Scion vehicles will have new designations for 2017. The Toyota Corolla iM and Toyota Yaris iA will join Toyota’s small car line-up.

For its move to Toyota, the 86 sports car adopts more aggressive styling with a larger center intake emphasizing the low, wide stance of the car. The front of the car has a new design with re-configured LED front headlamps and turn signals, and revised bumper. The rear now sports LED tail lamps and a new bumper design. The alloy wheels feature a twisted spoke design and 86 logos have been incorporated into a badge on the front fender, as well as inside the front headlamps.

The interior also features the 86 logo on the new “Grandlux” material used on the instrument panel surround. The same material adds a new, soft feel to the door trim. Drivers also will enjoy new seating material with silver stitching and a sporty steering wheel with integrated audio controls and an 86 logo on the center hub.

Enhanced control and agile performance are achieved through revised shock tuning and a spring rate change. On the manual version of the car, additional performance comes from a gear ratio change and a torque increase to 156 lb.-ft, as well as a five-horsepower increase to 205 hp. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) helps prevent the car from rolling back on steep hills.

The new Toyota 86 also will be featured in Formula Drift with racers Ken Gushi and Ryan Tuerck. The drivers, along with Series Champion Frederic Aasbo, will be defending the SR by Toyota race team’s 2015 Manufacturers’ Championship.

That looks great!!! What a great job they did! I like they went with the 86 name and an 86 badge mid fender. I want that badge..lol. Great great job by Toyota!! New wheels, silver stitching on the interior goes with more colors than the red. The tires look wider at least by the pics.

Here's the rear...
And here is where things get subjective by taste.

To me:
Rear bumper doesn't match the round curves of the rest of the car. Those points in the corners by the edges of the trunk lid just don't fit/
I Know I will be a minority here but those tails are just way to busy for me. I like the simplicity of the round ones.
And the front. Oh god that front. Looks like a BRZ got too close to a fire and sagged a bit.
Will reserve opinion on wheels until I see the real thing.

Do not like and probably would not buy.

Looks like the early rendering. Idk it looks alright. Changes are nice though as far as interior and gear ratios even if subtle. Excited for the actual release. Good news with them keeping it relatively the same is all the aftermarket support carries over at least.

I think the wheels look good for OEM, at least from afar. Now I see they have this trendy thing going where spokes are machined/have a cut in them and are painted, not so sure I would like that up close, probably makes wheel too busy, but I am on the conservative side of designs.

Front bumper = meh, them fangs and that upper lip, wtf.
Headlights = good
Front bumper garnish = good.
Tails = no thanks. If they'd come up with Tom's style OEM lamps, I'd be all over them.

Overall, I'd say no, not quite. Between refreshed 86 and a Miata, I think I like Miata better now as potential candidate, given that I can get away without "rear seats".

Will the wheels fit my AP racing sprint kit?

And ZOMG all the "should I buy the 2013 or wait for 2020 for power increase" crowd can now buy their cars!

The "should I use my handbrake to start on hills" debate can end as well!

I'm just glad you lot will finally stop calling it a GT86 in the US.

Wheels look good and the 86 name is good. I reserve judgment on the bumper.

Those fender badges look chopped and crooked.

Interior gets audio controls on the steering wheel and a Softex cover on the dash.
