How does 4 push ups = one???
Because apparently your rat ass deserved it!

Back in my cadet days the base training was formally named "Two Week in Training". There is nothing like being called a Twit all the time. I would prefer rat I think.

keeping the numbers low sorta tricks the mind into being able to do more without getting tired. the opposite would also apply to most.

for example: if you just counted straight to 20 you might start thinking, "holy shit. that's alot. I'm exhausted" and tire before you might using the other method.

it's an old training trick. I've used similar ones in the past with great success.

The military version of saying 4 = 1 has nothing to do with tricking the mind to make it easier. It is a form of asserting command and control since the person performing the push ups no longer really knows how many he will have to do but will keep going as long as he is told to. It is actually the complete reverse of trying to make it seem easier.

The "trick" was to NOT get the attention of my team leader, squad leader, platoon Sgt, 1sgt, etc... Doing push ups with a boot pressing on your back is way harder, no matter what number you are on!!!

I would have thought that two years of military school would have straightened you up -

Nope, I have scoliosis.

Seriously though, I learned how to deal with highly stressful situations at NMMI. It was a great experience for me.

I remember that in the "old Army", my drill sergeants would preface most things they said with "you ladies".

Of course that had to change when I commanded a unit with female soldiers. The drill sergeants came up with language that still would make them cry -

My first year at NMMI coincided with the time the first female cadet was allowed at the Citadel. I was in an all male troop. My troop commander threw our Troop a Pizza party when she resigned. Not a good look at all now...

I went to boot camp in Orlando. Our sister company had real sisters. Because I was the starboard watch LPO, I got a cush assignment and a girlfriend during work week.
