I'm sure you didn't mean to sound disrespectful, but it does come across that way to me. Between a Marine, Firefighter or Paramedic, only one volunteered to be deployed into worldwide combat on a moments notice knowing full well they may not return for months, if ever.

@0351USMC, grab the 10 Series trunk mat to use as an office chair floor protector.

But a firefighter volunteers to run into burning buildings, paramedics agree to go wherever they have to in order to be first responders and provide preliminary medical care to those grievous injured. How is that any different? Besides, you could be a clerk in the Marines and never see a day of combat. Do they deserve the same respect as the infanteer who gets into multiple fire fights?

Also, you volunteer for combat. You aren't forced to go.

I said "volunteer". Otherwise, besides not sleeping in the comfort and safety of their own bed every night, here a few differences:

I realize the differences. I have 6 years in the military.

That's all I'm going to say because you quoted a recruiting resource as an "inside perspective" of the differences between military and first responders. Bravo.

Thank you for your service.

Weird that you're getting so distressed over a respectful exchange.

I, too, have military experience including combat and clearly understand the difference between duties and responsibilities of Marines, Firefighters and First Responders, all working together to keep us safe.

Not distressed, just don't understand the merits behind the thanks. If you've served, you shouldn't feel the need to be thankful. Although this is very off topic...

Off topic...I agree that it's not necessarily a requirement to thank someone for their services. I never think any less about a person if they don't thank me. Honestly I don't need validation of knowing what I did. I know what I did and those who matter in my life know what I did and that's good enough for me. But if someone does thank me, it is appreciated.

At the same time it's kind of hard to get thanked. I mean what's the proper response ..... "Your welcome" like some @$$hole!!!

Back on topic, ended up not grabbing anything. It's was at a vehicle auction house, and insurance adjuster likely noted what all was on the vehicle, so ended up leaving it as is, minus anything not stock that I put on it.

Sort of is the new topic now I guess:
I would much rather receive the thanks than reactions we got back in the early to mid 70s when I first served! Back then the whole Vietnam thing was still very much in peoples minds and any military personnel could and frequently were looked down upon. Even in Canada we took some flak and we were not even involved!!!!
Had a bunch of hippies protest an exercise one time in 76 and they kept call us "baby killers". My only response was "man I was 13 years old and in Canada when fighting stopped". Their response was "well you guys would have done it if you could".
That was a pretty common scenario back then.
So... when somebody thanks you for your service the appropriate response is "no thank YOU for your support"

It's only gay if you push back, reach around or smile

Yeah honestly im ashamed of our country for how the Vietnam vets were treated. You can hate the war but why hate those who had no choice in going!

I was gonna say the same thing about that! My first station was in Germany and they don't take too kindly to American military being involved in their country. Don't get me wrong, some like it (boosts income, etc.), but you have to be on your toes when not at home. When I got back and was 'thanked', I didn't know how to respond since I wasn't in the US long enough to provide an adequate response. One day, I heard my friend say what @Tcoat said, and thought it made a lot more sense. Even today, it takes true admiration for the services to praise it.
