Well hopefully they make it a TSB for us in the states with the first production cars.

Im going to be going boost later this summer and im already predicting a huge fight with my dealer if my direct injectors go bad like others here. Hopefully the software update being passed to ecutek tuners will prevent futher damage, the question is how much damage ive already done.

I am sure this just helped the failure accelerate.

Also interesting to note it was also the longest drive I have done since installing FI an 1 hour and 15 minutes.
If you woudn't mind I'd like to ask you a few Q's to predict the health of my seals:

1. Did you track your car NA? How many times? If not, do you often redline shift and bang through the gears quickly on the street?
2. Did you have cooling system mods (radiator/oil cooler) NA?
3. Do you currently use cooling system mods FI?

(Only 93 Octane)
1. Only one track day, and it was about 35 minutes worth and in COLD temps 40s-50s, running at 7/10ths. 2 Autox. My driving has always been for efficiency. The car is slow, I never shift fast, but have often shifted from redline in 2nd to 3rd. And hit the rev limiter about 20 times in 10k miles in 2nd. In 10k miles.
Car was bone stock for 10k miles.

2. At about 10k miles when I did my final video review I did a baseline dyno, and was seeing coolant temps at 217 and was unhappy with it. After which I installed the larger radiator before doing FI.

3. At 10.5k Vortech installed with Oil Cooler. Oil and Coolant temps have been VERY stable and low.

4. At 11.5k Did the follow up dynos. No track or autox yet as I am far from confident with this kit, even street driving has been much less agressive that it was when the car was stock.

5. First long trip after FI was installed. 80 Miles one way 1.5 Hours. All economy driving, and all logged. 31MPG, coolant high was 195F and Oil high was 194F.

6. On the trip back 50 miles in with more agressive highway driving still managed 30MPG however back in more congested area, my buddy was next to me at a light and wanted to hear what launch control sounded like. At the light I started launch control and it revved to 4k and held. I did not launch it just tested the feature.

Next light I switched to MAP 3 of the rom and took off from the light normal not tire spin. Shifted from 1st 2nd at 4000RPMs then in second floored it and at 5000RPM the loud pop sound appeared. And I lifted throttle.

7. Life of the car has been at about 3/10ths or 95% at 2000-3000RPM.
I have been much less aggressive with this car compared to even my old Honda Insight as it just has no balls and no point of pushing the engine and trans.

@Dezoris What rad do you have to allow for the Intercooled SC and the Oil Cooler? Was there any modifications needed to get all three rads to fit?

It's highly unlikely.

Because of the way the automatic shifts.

Could still get lift off det i suppose or other random det. The real problem is detonation and seals that cannot handle the heat so I think they possibly could have the same seal issue, it just will probably take longer to show up on autos.

I don't think this is directly related to shifting. I've seen this problem first hand on a friends BRZ, and he has never shifted aggressively. Never tracked the car, either. He has a stick, though.

If it was primarily provoked by shifting, would the EcuTek Flatfoot-shifting option mitigate the detonation risk (which apparently causes the seals to fail) or would it even increase the risk of detonation?

It would really be useful if the first post of this thread was updated to include a listing of everyone with the issue, what mods they had, if they were running an after market tune (and whose), what fuel they were using and what their mileage was when symptoms began.

it is related to shifting. After I put my headers on, I can hear the car detonate when I lift throttle over 6k rpm or so. Couldn't hear it before.
