Question does anyone know why GT86 weights so much?

while being marginally bigger, the MX5 came in at 2500lbs.

while being marginally smaller, the 2012 civic came in at 2600 lbs for the coupe and 2700 for sedan.

while being marginally bigger, the last MR2 came in at 2195.

while being marginally bigger, the S2K came in at 2765, while being a convertible w/ higher hp.

So, does anyone know where the weight came from? Also, have anyone seen a weight summary of this car?

I mean, most of those cars listed are all relatively modern. So the safety feature argument may not be as strong (GT86 vs Civic)

Structure stiffening for sports car may also not be a good argument since MX5, and MR2 and S2K were all convertibles, yet two are lighter and one is about the same weight.

mx5 doesn't come with a spare
it's smaller, period
shorter wheelbase = shorter driveshaft, less weight
maybe thinner/smaller axles?

MR2, (i don't know which year you're refering to) but you have to remember that mid engined cars don't have a driveshaft and a rear diff to carry, so you can make the ****pit more of a single bucket, stiffer while using less materials. Also remember that the exhaust is 1/4 the size on a mid engined car.

the rest of the cars really fall into the same group, but i'll mention that sheet metal thickness would play a huge role in determining the cars weight

1mm thicker X whole car = big weight.

traditionally, older japanese cars are made from paper thin metal, so thin that leaning against a fender could bend it!

Huh? Complaining about 26-2700 pounds now? Pull out the spare and hit the gym.

you can't compare two cars just because one is marginally bigger.

the closest one in terms of power/weight/layout out of that list is probably the s2000.

the s2000 was produced back in 2000 and the safety requirements were not the same as it is today.

Because the NHTSA (and foreign equivalents) want all cars to be built like tanks. It's easier to mandate tougher cars than tougher licensing standards.

not even licensing standards

somewhere around the mid 90's people got this idea that human life is somehow a billion times more valuable than it was before.

so rather than attribute the occasional car fatality to the shit-happens pile of global karma, they started building tanks and ruin the fun for a very small % of us.

but what can you do

And don't forget two less seats, etc. The backseats in the GT86 may not be much, but the structure has to support them, plus their weight and the addtional passenger weight, as well as the anchor points for the harnesses.

I think this is the biggest factor. Two additional seats compared to most of those cars. I think the safety features is also a factor.

We'll have a true weight for the BRZ in just a couple days. We'll see just how much needs to be explained.

For the record, compared to pretty much every other car out there, I think 2770 is light. I'd like less, but I'll take what I can get.

(And I'm sure JDM bumper beams will be available at some point.)

at Geneva they post the 86 at 2600 lbs the closest rear wheel drive, 4 seater coupe to that weight is the lotus evora and its 3000 lbs

a mustang 5.0 is 1200 lbs heavier at 3800 lbs that's more than a half a ton heavier!!!!

for today's standards, there isn't anything lighter that can fit 4 people that's rwd

Edit: sorry i was a douche but anything under 3000lbs is considered a light car with today's safety standards

i understand 2770 in today's standard is consider very light, any additioanl weight saving measure beyond this point would probably be marginal. im just curious as to where did all the weight come from.

compare to the 12 civic coupe DX of 2600 lbs. where it have a mini spare, it have the backseats, while being short of drive shaft and rear diff.

Why would anyone in their right mind do that? Hyundai Accent is @2400 lbs, so what?
