That was indeed my car, and your mother in-law must have good taste.

There are a few different groups that do it but the most popular by far is the scca. They normally stick to parking lots but others will rent a track and set the course up to utilize the track and their own features. You will not leave second gear at an scca event for the track ones you will exceed 80mph. I do both of them as well as track days and drifting.

How would I get into this sort of thing, then?

I checked out the scca website, but there wasn't a clear "this is what you need to do if you want to join", nor was it clear to me how often they meet, or if it is casual enough for new people. Do I need a special licence or safety gear? I have zero experience with this sort of thing :/.

I saw a little on club vs solo, but there seemed to be more of the former.
Do you go to different places for each type of driving?

Feel free to pm me, if no one wants this on the thread...
And thanks for the help!

See this thread for events and sites for info on the local events: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58238

Detroit-SCCA.org is the local site, pop over there to see the schedule, registration for events is also linked, and the forum members there are very helpful.

Being in Ann Arbor, NWORscca.com is also close.

To answer your questions:

a) absolutely no experience other than a valid drivers license is necessary. SCCA regions have a novice chief and most members are more than willing to help out first timers, so just mention it at registration in the morning and they'll point you to the right people to get you started.

b) You are required to use a Snell SA or M rated helmet (open or closed face are both fine) that is current within the last 3 certifications (new certs every 5 years, so within 15 years). LOANERS ARE AVAILABLE FROM MOST LOCAL CLUBS.

c) Aside from the helmet, only closed toed shoes are required. Otherwise dress appropriately for the weather! and bring extra clothes for rain... always be prepared for rain.

d) in recent years events haven't reached their maximum participation limits, so there should be no concern with needing to pre-register for an event. Show up the day of based on the published schedule. Most events will publish a flier with all the info. Walk up to the registration table, and say it's your first event. You'll fill out some forms, give them some money, and someone will help you class your car appropriately. Bring some blue painters tape to add class numbers and letters on your car.... unless your car is blue... then use a different color.

e) fill your tires with extra air, and make sure the car is in good working order, battery is tied down properly, brakes are in good condition, etc.. safety equipment works.

f) if you like it, join by becoming a member of SCCA, you can do that at an event or at SCCA.com, it'll be a little cheaper per event and there are some other corporate partnership discounts and deals you can take advantage of as well.

I should mention events are cheaper if you preregister rather than register the day of.

Do you know of any groups around here that run AutoX at a track? I'd be interested to go to one of those rather than the normal parking lot setups.

WMR SCCA runs Grattan Raceway at least once a year and CCM does Waterford Hills
