Perrin 3" catback exhaust - impression
soooo i just installed my perrin 3"
and i gata say. its awesome. startup sounds beastly Heres a quick vid with a gopro. with NO OTHER MODS. stock front pipe / stock overpipe / stock headers [ame]http://youtu.be/iI3j5VAdPEI[/ame] and a slightly more exuburant vid using my galaxy s3 [ame]http://youtu.be/l2Re4BrgEso[/ame] from 3rd and up half the sounds drops off tho. so cruising wont give you migranes. the look is the same as the regular perrin catback. also your gana need a deep socket and some right angle attachment for the wrench. i had neither and didnt want to go to homedepot to get some so i just tightened the clamps and bolts by hand. the clamps where easy and you can feel when its tight enough. the top bolt of the midpipe was the worst tho. no space to fit anything there expect maybe that right angle attachment i mentioned. i literally tightened that bolt in 1cm increments :\ if there was another way, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!. . . all in all. im happy with the sound, look, and fitment. Any intakes mods? If so, have you noticed any gains at the wheels? Are you planning on going FI down the road? Looks good!

i really dig this setup, but i can't see the need for so little back pressure on an NA setup. but i suppose if a turbo is in your near future it makes more sense.

Once cams and other items become available to really help this motor breath I feel 3" will be the standard as it has become on so many other 4cy high out put applications.

And a stock STI gains a lot from upgrading to a 3" TBE. Its about emissions from a stock standpoint, not whats best.

I have seen 10 to 20 whp going from a 2.5" to 3.0" on a high compression 4cyl engines with large cams. No turbo just natural aspiration. These motors flowed air very well. I personally can not wait to see what these do, the fa20 that is, with head and cam upgrades possibly intake manifold, ect... only time will tell.

If Perrin has stock vs Perrin 2.5 vs Perrin 3" (ideally on the same dyno, same car), it would go a long way toward helping me decide which exhaust to buy. Thus far I've narrowed my choices down to STI, Perrin, or Borla, but I'd like to see which one sounds the best and gives the biggest power bump. If the power gains are about equal or better for the 3", I'd just go with that for long-term upgrade-ability. |

one a sound note:
one reason i got the 3" over the 2.5 is because its a bit louder while still sounding like a perrin. these exhausts are pretty quiet compared to others tbh, so i wanted that little boost in sound you get with the 3" and imo i think these sound the best it also gives you room for future modifications, because you never know what you might end up doing (vrooooom PSSSTTTT) |

I have not tested this on the FA20 yet. I have found those gains by only installing the exhaust and re-tuning for the extra air flow. If I was to purchase an exhaust I would personally look to a 3" as I would not want to be limited later. As well if you do not have a full 3" system and a good header then it would be a waste in my mind, unless you were planning to upgrade in the future. Plans change over time and if I decided time to pop some cams in, supercharge or turbo it, ect... I would not want to think I had to buy a new part that I already had purchased to support my ultimate goal.

Guys, debating the performance qualities of an exhaust on our NA car is pointless. We have a 2.0 that the ecu limits any increase in horsepower. So long it sounds great and it looks great, that's what matters.
@PERRIN did do dyno testing on the 3" vs the 2.5" and it did in fact show higher gains. If it didn't, they wouldn't have built it. It's the same reason we can't talk Jeff into building a header yet. But it's not going to be enough to feel in the butt dyno, just the ear and smile dyno. 3" will be very nice once you go boosted. You're not doing anything negative to your performance in the meantime.
