Thump happened on downshift into 2nd

Alright so this has happened three times now. I rev match downshift to second, and I hear and feel a thump/pop and the revs go down while the engine bogs. Is this the DI failure? Or is this a totally different issue?

When does the thump/pop occur? When you still have the clutch in and you move the gear shifter from 3rd to 2nd or after that when you let the clutch back out? Are you using the clutch to downshift or relying on rev matching only?

At about 3k rpm while I have the clutch in and revving the engine to downshift. I am using the clutch.

I'm sick of taking it to the dealer because if they can't replicate it, then they won't fix shit. It's only happened three times so getting it to do it again won't be easy.

So the physical act of moving the shifter from third to shift is when the noise occurs then. Does it seem to be RPM dependent? Like if you don't rev match, or get your rev match too high, does the noise not occur. If it very rarely occurs, I would not worry about it.

Its it like a muffled pop from under the vehicle @husker741 I rarely have gotten it to happen with a 3rd to 2nd "perfect" downshift at around 35-40mph.

I mentioned this in a another thread. Granted this is pure speculation, but I get this once n awhile. It does not sound like a misfire (DI issue) but it almost sounds like the clutch puck is sticking then slapping as if it were stuck. There is no jerk, it is a clean shift, but that is what it sounds like to me. I get it once n awhile as well, cannot replicate it, happens in 2-3 upshift mostly, 1 downshift note. Granted, 2nd gear in the car is VERY notchy.

I also would like a solution for the notchy feel of the shifts. Bigger, softer bushings perhaps?

Saying this because I tested a mazdaspeed 3's shifter feel and it was much more plush going between gears.

Swap the fluid, it will help, but these transmissions are notorious for being notchy.

I read somewhere on these forums that the shift is designed that way to perform better once warmed up (optimised for performance), so it will be notchy cold.
