Can this be removed / capped off?

Can this be removed / capped off? Anyone have a how-to and parts needed?

Well, yes, it can be removed and capped off.

But, why would you want to do that?

Get a turbo, supercharger or Cold air intake and it replaces that. Otherwise it's part of your stock air intake.

Drill out the rivets, remove a single bolt (showing in the pic) and put a cap over the hole in the airbox. The cap doesn't have to be airtight since it is upstream of the air filter.

The reason for that assembly is to tune the intake sound. Maybe the car will snarl like a V12 without it. Or maybe it will sound like a duck fart. Probably the latter.

It's resonator, to filter out some frequencies of noises. It can be capped off, but may slightly impact performance IIRC from mishimoto testing. I'd rather delete/plug off soundtube, but leave this resonator box where it is.

I capped mine when I binned the sound maker and installed the Mishimoto intake.

I used the rubber "sock that came with the kit from Mishimoto as I pulled all of the sound maker to the firewall.

I also binned/plugged the other lower resonator and shortened the intake tube (snorkel mod).

I ended up with more induction noise (no, it doesnt sound like a duck).

The OEM standard airbox breathes very well and is not a restriction NA.

Unless you ask someone who is selling aftermarket items, or have purchased said aftermarket items.

I believe Grimmspeed did a back to back dyno test with it on and off.
It lost horsepower with it off.

Easiest answer is, it's a chamber to tune out reversion losses. I thought a lot about taking it off but in the end decided to keep it on. Reversions the biggest problem with non ITB intakes, especially since our stock systems are so well setup.

So, Subaru say resonators are for muffling sound.

Resonators are not engineered into the TRD option.

Other airbox designs that manufacturers/suppliers claim to increase power, don't have them.

Other makes that add resonance chambers to keep noise down, but, have OEM upgrades that don't have resonance chambers.

The claimed 1-2hp loss from one aftermarket supplier.

The fact that I found no loss from deleting them when I installed the Mishimoto intake sans resonance chambers.

Question:

Did TRD, and every other manufacturer after all their testing get it wrong by not having resonance chambers?

As for reversion: a couple of plastic buckets on the airbox and intake pipe isn't going to do anything IRT reversion.

86MLR: do we know as much as toyota/subaru/trd about all possible bits affecting effectiveness of intake? Mentioned TRD intake has also other things different, eg. volume of filterbox (wondering, if it matters, eg. for throttle response). And sheer size of TRD intake's airfilter box also leaves no place for stock resonator or it's alike to be attached. And potential buyers of aftermarket intakes may care less about noise increase. Who knows, maybe if there had been space to put resonator and if it wouldn't have made design more expensive (as custom is needed due clearance) TRD might have had put it in. There also might be situation if we look at different alternative designs that some may gain in other ways a bit more, to offset willingly lesser loss elsewhere. For example - to me it looks that TRD concentrated on increasing filter area to lessen resistance to airflow w/o compromising filtering quality. What if it brought +5hp, but not having resonator lost -2hp and makes product $75 cheaper, so they went with net positive overall gains with such design. Summarizing - i wouldn't use as argument there being or not resonator in TRD intake's design. Without extensive expertise in intake design it will stay mostly needless guesswork from our side. Still, if one uses stock airbox, and as mishimoto did their testing, i see no reasons, even if very slightly, but cut engine performance just for sake of slightly cleaner look under bonnet with removing resonator.
